Perfume

Perfume is made up of alcohol, water & perfume (fragrance) oil.

It is a word that comes from Latin per fumum, which means "through smoke" (per means through, fumum means smoke).

There are 3 major types: oriental, floral & chypre (means "very sincere" in French). There are also many sub-variations such as woody, musky, aquatic, spicy & fruity.

Eau de - means "water of" in French.

Eau de cologne - contains about 3-5% perfume oil. Used by men.

Aftershave lotions & splash colognes - contains about 0.5-2% perfume oil. Used by men.

Eau de parfum - contains about 15-18% perfume oil. Used by women.

Eau de toilette - contains about 4-8% perfume oil. Used by women.

Parfum (perfume) is the strongest of them all as it contains the most perfume oil. Use sparingly.

Scented ingredients added to perfumes include ginger, grapefruit, musk, peppercorns, mandarin peel, fig leaves, rose, watercress, bamboo, clementine, vanilia, honeysuckle, green tea & the list goes on.

A perfume contains between 10 to more than 250 ingredients

Shoes

Sandals originated in warm climates where the soles of the feet needed protection but the top of the foot needed to be cool.

4,000 years ago the first shoes were made of a single piece of rawhide that enveloped the foot for both warmth and protection.

In Europe pointed toes on shoes were fashionable from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries.

In the Middle East heels were added to shoes to lift the foot from the burning sand.

In Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries heels on shoes were always colored red.

Shoes all over the world were identical until the nineteenth century, when left- and right-footed

shoes were first made in Philadelphia.

In Europe it wasn't until the eighteenth century that women's shoes were different from men's.

Six-inch-high heels were worn by the upper classes in seventeenth-century Europe. Two servants, one on either side, were needed to hold up the person wearing the high heels.

Sneakers were first made in America in 1916. They were originally called keds.

Boots were first worn in cold, mountainous regions and hot, sandy deserts where horse-riding communities lived. Heels on boots kept feet secure in the stirrups.

The first lady's boot was designed for Queen Victoria in 1840.

In Biblical times a sandal was given as a sign of an oath.

In the Middle Ages a father passed his authority over his daughter to her husband in a shoe ceremony. At the wedding, the groom handed the bride a shoe, which she put on to show she was then his subject.

Today in the U.S. shoes are tied to the bumper of the bridal couple's car. This is a reminder of the days when a father gave the groom one of his daughter's shoes as a symbol of a changing caretaker.

In China one of the bride's red shoes is tossed from the roof to ensure happiness for the bridal couple.

In Hungary the groom drinks a toast to his bride out of her wedding slipper.

Jewlery

The tradition of borrowing jewelry from high-end Jewelers to wear to the Academy Awards ceremony was started in 1944, by Jennifer Jones, who wore Harry Winston's jewelry for the occasion.

Pure Gold is always yellow. The color of gold can be altered by adding in different metals. This is how it becomes white, red, pink, green, ECT.

Pearls are formed when a tiny bit of sand gets trapped inside an oyster. The oyster produces”nacre" as a defense mechanism that coats the intruder, layer after layer. A pearl is only found naturally in 1 in every 10,000 oysters.

Cultured Pearls are formed with human intervention but placing an irritant into an opened mollusk or oyster.

Mother of Pearl is the thick nacre that coats the inner shell of the oyster or mollusk. The oyster secretes the nacre from the cells on the mantle tissue to protect itself from parasitic organisms.

Necklace Lengths:

-15-16" is called "Choker length" and hits just above the collar bone.

The Pearl of Lao Tzu is the largest pearl ever found, weighing 14.1 lbs and 10 inches in diameter.

Most Diamonds are 1-3 Million years old. The name diamond comes from the Greek word Adamas, which means indestructible or unconquerable.

Engagement rings are worn on the third finger of the left hand, because the ancient Egyptians believed that the vein in that finger ran directly to the heart.

A Ruby is actually a red sapphire.

High quality emerald is more valuable than a diamond.

Cartier introduced the metal Platinum to Jewelry in 1896.
