ONE YEAR LATER

“Lucy, are you ready?” Danny asks me from the other side of the bathroom door.

“Almost, give me another minute,” I reply. I still have to put my make up on. After I do, I look at myself in the mirror. My hair is now down to the middle of my back. I quickly pull my hair back into a ponytail and I walk out of the room.

"Happy Birthday." Danny gives me a hug. “Ready for this?”

“I guess. I can’t believe that it’s already been a year since Emily died.” A single tear slides out of my eye.

“It’s amazing how fast time can go by.” Danny wipes the tear away with his thumb. “Do you have the journal entries?”

I hold up a copy of Emily’s journal. “Yeah. Do you have the lighter?” Danny nods. “Then we’re all set.” We walk outside to his backyard. Mom and I moved in with Danny before school started.

Mom is standing by the tree. She walks over and hugs me. “I’m so proud of you, Lucy.”

“Thanks, Mom.” I hand Danny the papers and he smiles at me before he starts the lighter. I nod and soon Emily’s journal - well, a copy of it - is burning. Danny drops it on the concrete so he doesn’t burn anyone or anything. As I start crying, Danny pulls me into him. I adjust my head so I can still see the paper on fire.

Danny holds me even when the paper isn’t burning, because I’m still crying. No matter how much therapy I go through, I know that I’ll never be able to recover from losing Emily. I also know that no matter what happens to me, Danny will never leave me. And I smile.
