Bizzare Silence

I smiled to myself, feeling soft grass below me and seeing a beautiful view of clear sky above. That's when reality hit me. Isn't there supposed to be a ceiling there when I wake up?

I tried to recall the events from last evening, noticing I was still right there in the middle of the park. There was also an unconscious figure beside me; I knew who it was, of course.

I stood up and looked around to see if anyone else was in the park, but strangely, no one was there. I took a step when someone grabbed my leg. I attacked the ground with my mad ninja skills, trying to get away (so you see, I've got mad ninja skills. Actually, I'm a pretty awesome person when I'm not fighting with him).

"Where am I?" asked the voice I detested. "What are you doing here?"

"That's what I was trying to figure out before you grabbed my leg," I replied while trying to jerk his hand off.

Ignoring my statement, he said bewilderingly, "Is it morning already? What happened?"

"I know just as much as you do that we were fighting and then the lightning . . . And then, maybe we fainted, and I--"

He cut me off, "Your hair looks like a bird's nest and you know this hairstyle suits you much better than what you do at school." He grinned wickedly.

I couldn't believe him; here I was trying to make sense of the whole situation and trying to figure out why we're here, but he can't seem to get enough of the satisfaction of irritating me.

"I bet it still looks better than yours," I said as he ran his fingers across his hair.

Why was it such a big problem? A guy has to run his hand through his hair and hey, it's done. And a girl will sit in front of a mirror and spend an hour on her hair, but in the end, it's still not perfect.

Now was not the time to think about hair. I stood up once again and made up my mind.

"Hey, I'm going home and I hope we won't cross each other's path in school today. Au revoir." I knew just a little bit of French, whilst he knew nothing, so I happily marched off before he said anything else to infuriate me.

This sounds crazy, but I think the world has changed. I mean, everything is so damn silent. I opened my front door and looked around to see absolutely nobody there. I wondered where my mom would be at this time in the morning; I thought maybe she had left for work early.

I took a quick shower and finished getting ready for school. Then I stepped out of the house, thinking that something was definitely wrong. I haven't seen a single soul today except for Kevin.

I waited for the school bus, which ended up not showing, so I decided to walk to school. This was the moment when weird thoughts started coming to my mind.

Where is everybody?

*****

I rushed inside the school hallway, discovering it was empty when it was usually crowded. It was not Sunday for sure.

I looked everywhere, but no one was to be found. Those weird thoughts changed into something that I usually couldn't handle nicely: Panic. Where was everyone? Was this some joke? Everybody knows I hate sick practical jokes.

I saw the silhouette of a person standing at the end of the hallway, but it was too dark to recognize them. As I rushed to that direction to see who it was, they finally spoke up.

"Kaitlin, you're not alone."
