His heart sped up just looking at it, an eagerness he always felt when he wandered upon instruments welling up in his chest. He'd always wanted to try playing, but no one in the band ever let him near theirs, and he didn't have the money to even consider a small, cheap version of an instrument.
Would they mind if I tried playing?
Slowly making his way down the stairs, Teller kept an eye on his surroundings and made sure that he still heard music coming from the sound room, but kept far away from it to keep from being noticed.
Once he stepped down into the den area, Teller felt a bit more relaxed. He paced for a few moments before finally making himself walk over to the piano. It was in pristine condition and absolutely gorgeous.
Looking over his shoulder, he pursed his lips and listened as the music continued from the sound room. Just a few minutes, then I'm leaving. He told himself sternly as he sat down on the comfortable bench. The keys called to his fingers, drawing his right hand up to gently press down on one of the white bars. He didn't know what key it actually was, because even after joining the band, he was denied any kind of actual musical training, besides better controlling his voice, but as he pressed it down until its sound chimed, he knew right away where he'd heard that note in a million songs before.
His other hand rose to settle on the keys, his pointer finger pressing down as the one on his right hand lifted. The note was just as familiar, but he could place it as being a little deeper than the previous one. They were a few spaces apart on the piano, and as he began to press keys in either direction, he quickly noted that every single time his hands got further away from each other, the sounds got deeper or higher.
Of course, he'd assumed that was how it worked from watching Davis play, but to confirm it felt amazing. Teller's mind appreciated how things worked, from the basic simple things in life, to the intricate, mind-numbingly complicated.
He spent the better part of an hour learning every single key, what sound it made, where it was placed in accordance to the others, then what sounds each made when combined with different other keys.
A huge smile stretched his lips as he played. Most new students would consider learning in such a way tedious and useless, as they wouldn't remember every single sound or space, but Teller had no problem forming a piano in his mind and placing each and every detail where it needed to go.
By the time the blue clock on the far wall struck six, he had most of the combinations decently memorized. Sitting back, he licked his lips. His mind was buzzing with all of the different sounds as he replayed what he'd done on fast-forward over and over.
Okay. A song...
Taking in a calming breath, Teller nudged aside the information he'd been working on and allowed himself to relax. The song that had been being worked on during the time he'd spent at the piano started up again, having stopped off and on for a few minutes here and there.
Maybe I should try playing that?
It wasn't familiar, but as he focused on the notes, he easily picked out their places on the piano keys and began putting the pieces together in his mind. After barely touching the keys for twenty minutes, Teller began to play small pieces of the song. He didn't start in order, but actually pieced together different stanzas as he went. Some parts actually didn't return to their normal spots in the song, but were changed slightly and moved to a place he thought they fit better.
When he finally stopped, content with the song and panting quietly, Teller felt as if a weight had been lifted off of his shoulders. I finally got a chance to play. Deciding not to push his luck any further and risk being found in an area he likely wasn't allowed, Teller stood and hurried over to the staircase.
