Ch. 17 Brick by Boring Brick

“You do realize we only have Sunday and Monday to do this, right?” Ellie asked as we lounged in our huge apartment.

Oh, right. Monday was Memorial Day.

“Yeah,” I replied, staring up at the ceiling.

“So…?” Ellie prompted.

“So, what?”

“So what’s your plan?”

“Oh. Um, I’m still figuring it out.” I said. Man, this bed was soft. It distracted me from the burden of thinking of a plan.

“Well, please figure it out quickly.” Ellie said impatiently. She sat up in her own giant, comfy bed and looked across the room at me. “Hey, we should go out and shop.”

“Why?”

“Maybe you’ll figure something out while we’re buying stuff. And besides, the purpose of this trip was to visit Liam. But since he’s being a stupid jerk right now, we should at least enjoy ourselves.” Ellie said.

I groaned. “But you know I hate shopping.”

“Then what about the pool? They have like, six indoor ones in this place.” Ellie suggested.

I looked up. “Seriously?”

She laughed and tossed a pillow at me, where it promptly landed on my face. “Seriously.”

“You think we’re allowed to be here?” I whispered to Ellie.

She shrugged. “Maybe. Who cares?”

Ellie suddenly charged forward and dove forward, splashing fully into the pool. Water flew everywhere, drenching me.

“Hey!” I protested.

Ellie’s soaked head appeared and she grinned. “Come on! There’s no one in here!”

I definitely had a bad feeling about this, but nevertheless I charged into the pool, dropping my towel and bag, and sunk deep into the blue waters.

Ellie joined me underwater, grinning at me. I smiled and kicked away from her, springing up to the surface.

“Now all we need is some hot guys from Twilight, some music, and we’ve got ourselves a great time in Hollywood.” Ellie mused.

I raised an eyebrow at her. “Ew, no. Werewolves are shirtless creeps who transform into giant, stinky dogs.”

We began laughing, but were quickly interrupted as a furious voice rang out. “What are you two doing here?”

Simultaneously we turned to take in the sight of Liam and Taylor standing, both looking outraged. I almost burst out laughing again, but knew that wasn’t going to be very safe for anyone.

Ellie and I exchanged a look and climbed out of the pool. It was kind of awkward with everyone dressed in bathing suits, thus technically being half naked.

Yeah, I get really weird thoughts sometimes.

“Sorry,” I apologized. “We were bored.”

Liam wrinkled his nose, and I nearly expected him to launch into some vicious yelling with Taylor.

And instead, he did something totally surprising.

My former best friend sighed and glanced at pair of us. “You can go back into the pool, you know. You don’t have to get out just because we came.”

Taylor looked at Liam. “Baby, you’re going to let them stay?”

He shrugged. “Why not? My parents are letting them stay here for the rest of the weekend, so I guess they’re free to wander around and all that crap.”

I exchanged another look with Ellie that said, Do you think Liam got killed and replaced by a nicer robot version of him?

All right, so maybe the look didn’t exactly say that, but you get the picture.

“Then let’s leave.” Taylor said, glaring at us. She wrapped a possessive arm around Liam. “I don’t want to be in the pool with these losers.”

Liam shrugged again. “We can just go in the Jacuzzi while they take the main pool, then.”

Taylor stared at Liam, her mouth slightly open in shock. Ellie and I were having the same exact reaction. It was like Liam had got bonked on the head and was changed into a nicer version. It was the old Liam that I wanted, but getting there.

Liam’s stupid little girlfriend pouted at him, flipping her dark hair and trailing a finger down his arm in a seductive (not) manner. “Why don’t we just leave? Their presence makes me want to vomit.”

“We’re right here, you know.” Ellie grumbled at my side.

Taylor ignored us and continued pouting up at Liam, suddenly grabbing his chin and crashing her lips against his. I rolled my eyes and sighed. Seriously? It’s been what, like, a day since they both made out in front of me?

There was a very awkward silence for a few minutes, except for the discreet sound of the two lovers kissing in front of us. Ellie glanced at me, strolled forward, grabbed Taylor by the strap of her very tramp-like bikini, and shoved her into the pool.

She immediately resurfaced, spluttering. “Hey! You bitc—”

She was cut off by the sound of boisterous laughter as I collapsed onto the floor and proceeded to laugh my butt off—literally. I was laughing so hard that I didn’t notice Ellie come up behind me, and when I did it was already too late. She suddenly pushed me forward and I fell into the pool, dousing Taylor once more.

I resurfaced mere seconds later, finding Liam and Ellie cracking up at me while Taylor glared her usual menacing stare.

I grinned up at both of them, locking eyes with Liam for a moment. I saw a strange flitter of emotions cross his eyes, and then it was gone. I looked away and continued laughing with them.

Whatever had happened with Liam, I liked it.
