Part 11

My heart was thumping in my chest like it would burst, my brain ran a thousand miles an hour trying to comprehend what had just happened. The room felt like it was getting smaller, I grabbed my phone and went to the balcony. I lit another cigarette and sucked it down like my life depended on it and relit another, I scrolled through my phone, my fingers shaking and clicked call.

"April, I wasn't expecting to hear from you so soon" his voice was smug.

"she fucking knows Alex" I blurted out.

The phone went silent, I checked to see if I was still connected to him and I was.

"Alex?" I tried to calm my voice, but I know it was panicked.

"What happened?"

"She came over, tried to pay me to leave Oscar because apparently you all think I'm not fucking good enough and then before the bitch leaves she said, 'stop sleeping with my husband'" I inhaled the last bit and stubbed out my smoke and lit another, my hand was shaking so much it was hard to light it.

"I'll be over soon" and he hung up the phone.

All I could do was pace the balcony for what felt like the longest ten minutes of my life, I saw Alex's car pull up in the street. I went over to the door and unlocked it and waited for him in the hallway. He stepped out of the elevator carrying coffees, I tried to give him a smile.

"thought you could use these" he reached into his pocket and pulled out another pack of cigarettes.

"Thanks" I grabbed them, and we headed inside.

He handed me a coffee and motioned for a smoke.

"Did you know that Elizabeth knew?" I took a sip of my coffee, white mocha extra shot, he remembered.

"I suspected as much, Christ half the house staff are on her side"

"Did you know she had paid Oscars other girlfriends to leave?"

"That one I didn't know, I mean Elizabeth knew about me and a few of them"

"Fucking hell Alex, that's your son"

He didn't have anything to say but took a drag.

"I need to tell Oscar"

"You can't, Elizabeth will destroy you. Oscar is her baby boy and she's had her heart set on him marrying a Worthington, Charlotte Worthington in particular, you mention any of this and she'll find a way to get rid of you, of course she won't mention me, because you know reputation and my lawyer is better" he winked at me and tried to defuse the tension.

"So, what I'm just meant to go along like nothing happened?"

"If you truly love Oscar, yes do nothing, I'll do anything I can to give you a heads up, like for instance she's organized for Charlotte to come over for dinner, she thinks I'm unaware, but I do have some knowledge of what goes on inside my house, no doubt she'll seize every opportunity for Oscar and her to be together"

Alex's phone started buzzing

"Speaking of my darling wife" he pulled the phone out signaled to me to be quiet and hit the green button.

"Elizabeth my love"

I finished my coffee and relit another cigarette.

"This Friday did you say?....No I can't I'm looking at my planner right now and Friday night is not good.... Oh well I'm sure Oscar and April would love to dinner"

My head spun around at hearing my name.

"Oh April can't make it?..... Mhmmm.... Yes.... Alright then, I'll see you later" He clicked end and put his phone back in his jacket pocket.

"What did she have to say?" I inhaled my cigarette sharply waiting for his response.

"She's already spoken to Oscar about the dinner and Oscar said you already had something on so it'd just be him attending" Alex took my cigarette and had a drag before handing it back to me.

I'd forgotten about the work party to celebrate the new client list.

"Fuck me she's good"

"Yes, yes she is"
