Chapter Four

I stood in front of the huge full body mirror and took in my appearance. I looked absolutely gorgeous with the new look. I had dumped my church girl look, the long skirts and tops that didn't reveal much of my body. I got lots of jeans, and different kinds of trousers, and matched them up with crop tops and other normal tops.

I got my natural hair relaxed, and got a Meagan Good-Franklin haircut. It was gorgeous. I learnt how to get my make-up done and I actually looked like a slay queen. It was fortunate though that I wasn't one. I also got hazel contact lenses.

I admired my model-like body. I've always had a tiny body, much like my dad. It was through gym that my body was toned up. I had the abs to match.

"Now, I need to call my big brother", I said, grabbing my new cellphone.

I accessed my Google drive and then I got the last number my brother was using in the States. For the life of me, I was hoping he hadn't changed it, or else I'd be stuck. His phone kept ringing and just as I was about to give up, he picked up.

"South African caller, good afternoon (I'm guessing it's afternoon that side right now)", he said upon answering. I couldn't help it, but when I heard his voice I broke down and cried. "Whoa whoa whoa! Thandeka, is that you baby sis?" he said frantically.

"I... I... I...", I tried to speak but couldn't finish the sentence.

"Who is that, bro? She sounds upset man", I heard some guy say.

"She's my baby sister, Dee. And she needs me", said Mdu. I tried my hardest to regain my composure, and it happened to an extent where I could make coherent sentences.

"King, I've been meaning to call you. Something horrible happened, and I need your help. I know we're not on speaking terms and everything, but I cannot make it out of this situation by myself. I need you King", I told him.

"I promised myself that I would never let you down when you need me. I'll make arrangements, and I'll be home within the next forty eight hours. Just hold on for me, Bear. Now breathe for me okay?", he told me and I calmed down. I took a deep breath in and let it out slowly. "That's it... That's my girl", he said and I could hear the smile in his voice.

"Thank you for picking up the phone. I died a little inside when it kept ringing", I told him honestly and he chuckled. How I missed him.

"It took you long to call me. Five years is a very long time", he said, and I heard typing sounds in the background. I guessed he was trying to book a flight already. I needed to give him a chance to do that.

"We'll address all that once you're here, King. I love you, okay", I said.

"I love you Bear", he told me and I cut the line.

"That went well", I said to myself.

He's our brother; he would never let us down, said my subconscious, and for the first time, I agreed with her.

Mduduzi's Point of View

I was with my friend Duke Simmons who I met when I first moved to America. We were both early risers and just finished two kilometers run, and our three-hour gym session. We were at the shooting range when my phone started ringing. It was a South African number and for a moment there, I hoped that it wasn't my mother calling.
