'The Warrior'

My mother always said that my sister was the pretty one. I could see where she got that. Evelyn was gorgeous. Even the werewolves would flirt with her, breaking the pack rules. I never got to see what became of her. I never got to see if she just blossomed early and turned ugly later on. I never got to see my parents telling me that I would be pretty like her too.

They weren't killed. I was. Or at least they thought I was.

Over 150 years ago the werewolves took over. Since then life as a human sucked.

Some of the Alpha's were nicer than others. They let us stay in their territories, often getting jobs in kitchens or as cleaners. That was the best case scenario. Most of the Alpha's preferred to think of humans as inferior to their greatness. They were kept as toys to play around with, or hunted down once they were foolish enough to step on their land.

My family and I stayed on a territory that belonged to Alpha Samuel. He was... indifferent towards us. My parent both had to clean the pack house. My sister and I did small chores around the house as well, but spend most of our time looking at the wolves, studying them as much as we could.

And then one day, a day that was just like any other day, the pack got a surprise visit. At least it was surprising for us. Another Alpha by the name of Garrick came to visit from a neighboring territory. He however did not take kindly to humans.

Every night of the week he stayed he would pick out a few humans from the pack house staff and hunted them in the forest with his men. On the fourth night, I was among those he picked.

I never expected to make it out. I wasn't supposed to. They gave us a head start of five minutes. In those five minutes I discovered the wonders of running. I was only twelve at the time, but the chores around the house had built up my strength more than I had realized.

Now don't get me wrong. I am not trying to sell you the story of a twelve year old human outrunning fully grown werewolves. But I was smarter than them. I guess Evelyn was the pretty one, and I was the smart one. I ran as far as I could, counting down the seconds in my head. I couldn't  even see any of the other humans anymore. Which turned out to be a blessing.

I hid in a tree. As stupid as it sounds. In reality there was nothing I could have done to lose them. It was more of a string of fortune. First the rain started to pour down on us, with Thunder soon following. My clothes stuck to my body as I watched the wolves pass slowly underneath me, obviously they knew someone was there. My heart was pounding in my throat.

They would find me. I knew they would.

But then, right as I was about to just give up and accept my death a loud scream came, followed by an nauseating sound I would never forget.  They had found another human, who was hiding in the trees nearby me. The pack, who was already a few beers in, walked back to the pack house after eating the man whole.

Rain, death, alcohol. My three lucky things.
