Sang is chosen for the Culling, a series of fights to the death that are generally played by men. In fact, Sang is the first woman selected, well, ever. As the games start, and Sang forms bonds with a group of nine men, she comes to realize that the...
"Now don't be like that." Sawyer still watched me with that same expression. "We have plenty of time to kill, to get to know each other, before one of your husbands come stumbling along."
I wrapped my arms around my legs. I wasn't sure what to say, but I didn't like this man at all. Something about his eyes hinted about a spark of madness within, and he reminded me of President Hendricks right before he got angry.
Payton, who had been watching the scene warily, addressed Sawyer suddenly. "What about your promise?"
Sawyer turned his focus from me and waved his hand in the air. "Relax Payton. Just trust me. I told you how this works."
"That's the point, I don't fully trust you. I took a leap of faith in agreeing to this to begin with, and I don't plan on waiting long for repayment." Payton retorted. "We had an agreement. I need assurances that it will be upheld."
"Are you doubting our future President?" Efrain was leaning against the cave wall nearest to Sawyer as he spoke. "Besides, we don't have a choice now, we are already involved. We've already got all the leverage that we need. All that is left is for Blackbourne to surrender, and we are home free."
I had fully expected that they were using me as bait, but this other talk seemed somewhat suspicious. Curiosity began to rise in place of my fear. "What do you mean?" I forced myself to ask, my voice a bit louder than before.
Sawyer glanced over at me. "We just have an accord, that's all. Nothing for you to worry your pretty little head about. While we wait for the party to begin, you can just keep sitting there with that cute little smile on your face. It brings me joy."
I frowned. First of all, I hadn't been smiling and, secondly, I certainly didn't want to bring him any measure of joy. "What party?"
His grin faltered slightly. "I said that it was nothing that you needed to worry about."
"Oh, I get it." Chet interjected. "Sawyer must have some kind of message being transmitted as we speak, I would bet that there are others involved. I'm guessing that the overall plan would be to have all nine of her husbands to sacrifice themselves in order to save her, am I right?"
Sawyer shot him a warning glare, clearly displeased that Chet had told me. However, Chet ignored him as he continued. "That's brilliant, Sawyer. There's no way that could ever backfire on you."
"Are you stupid? Whose side are you on anyway? Of course it won't backfire!" Sawyer was full out scowling at Chet now. "They are all gallant like that. It's extremely predictable." He glanced back down at me. "Then when it's all said and done, and our part is played, all we'll have left is the future."
Why did I have a feeling that he thought that his future included me?
