The dark shadow of something enormous crossed the moon, too slow to be a bird but too fast to be a plane. It flew heavily, rising and falling with each powerful stroke of its muscles. And then there was a second shadow, dipping down to follow the first. Gracefully, the first and then the second grazed the misty surface of the Lake to take a drink on the fly. Obscured by darkness but revealed by gleams of moonlight reflected on their glistening heads and bat-like wings, they looked prehistoric, mythic, legendary. Membranous wings beating quickly, they rose up into the inky sky again, skimming over the tall buildings and cranes that had sprung up overnight, like porcupine quills on the back of antique Loon Lake Village. It wasn't until they reached the level of low-flying clouds that the dragons wheeled and turned back, charting a course which would land them on the island in the centre of the Lake.
