Teach me how to kill

Start from the beginning

I could see Brett's eyes water slightly as he pulled me in for a tight hug which I returned. Brett murmurs an I love you as I pull away. With one last glance I walk away from the only chance I had to ever have a normal life.

As I walked to my car I look at the house I shared with Brett one last time. It was a beautiful red brick one story house with an amazing garden that was Brett's pride and joy.

I had it all yet I was miserable. This is what I truly need.

I thought back to the day that brought this change.

It had been like any other Wednesday morning; I had breakfast with Brett then went to the post office to get my mail before work.

I opened the box and a manila envelope caught my eye. It stood out next to the letters and bridal magazine I received from my monthly subscription. Little by little I had been planning the perfect wedding and now it was just a few months away.

The manila folder didn't have an address or anything that gave me an idea of who sent it. Not thinking any of it, I rip it open and the first thing I see made me want to vomit the contents of my stomach.

There were several pictures from my sister's crime scene.

Harmony was no older than I currently am when she was killed. It had been a surprise to everyone, nobody could think of a reason why someone would want to harm her. Harmony was the closest thing I could compare to a saint. She would go to church every week, she volunteered at the animal shelter and she was always there for everyone.

The only fault that she had was never giving up on that sorry excuse of a journalism career she loved so much.

She was always chasing after some dumb story that at the end no one published.

Those pictures brought back memories I had endlessly tried to forget.

It was a particularly warm day, Harmony and I had made plans to have lunch but like many other times she stood me up probably to chase some story.

After calling and getting no answer I decided to go to her house and give her a piece of my mind.

I had a key of her house so I stormed on, yelling about how I couldn't believe she stood me up again. When she doesn't answer I start looking in all of the rooms.

Everything was a mess, couches were turned over her drawers had been looked through. I started screaming for Harmony and looking through the rooms as I dialed 911.

Nobody would ever be ready for the sight I encountered when I entered the kitchen. My older sister, the one who always had a smile on her face and wonder in her eyes was now lying in a pool of her own blood. Her once beautiful face was bruised and swollen and her skin was ghostly pale. But what I'll never forget was her eyes, the ones that were always analyzing everything, trying to find her big story, those eyes were replaced by an empty soulless gaze that made shivers travel down my spine.

"Hello, is anyone there?" The 911 operator repeats through the phone.

I feel a knot form in my throat "My sister, somebody killed my sister" I wanted to do something but I couldn't move from my spot.

"Miss could you check the pulse?" The operator asked her voice calm. "We have an ambulance and police officers on the way" I don't reply. "Miss are you in any danger? Please stay on the line we have a couple of units on the way."

"My sister, she's dead. Harmony is dead, she died. Somebody killed her" I start off with a whisper them something inside of me snaps and I drop my phone on the floor as I run towards Harmony's cold body, trying to shake her awake.
