No, not the baby project. Anything but that. I rubbed my forehead, swallowing nerviously. Leslie had told me about this before. I swill remember whens he had it, it was horrible. A devil in a doll's form. It cried all the time and you couldn't get any sleep. It's meant to teach us about the stress of being a parent, hopefully to put off Teen Pregnancy. I shook my head as Miss. Holler went on.
"Yes, I see all your faces. No not the devil doll! When, I'll be happy to inform you that you won't have to look after a doll."
Immediately my hopes were lifted and I heard a few 'yesses' pass around the class. No doll, yes. That meant sleep.
"You'll be looking after a real baby."
What? Did I just hear her correctly? A..a real baby? I looked at Sarah to find her already staring at me, her mouth wide open. Startled murmers rippled around the class and this time I didn't want to tell them to stop, I felt like joining them.
"Yes, a real baby. You heard me correct. Off on the outskirts of town is a small area where ten small apartment houses are situated. Each has a bathroom, kitchen, loungeroom and a bedroom. Your task this term is to spend one month living in one of those houses with a partner. Food, Water and the other necessities will be provided for you. The biggest part though, is you'll be looking after a Month Old Baby. Some wonderful, wonderful woman have decided to help out with this project and have let us 'borrow' ten cute little babies for one month. But, they won't let you look after them alone. So cameras have been placed throughout the house, and we'll be watching at all times to make sure nothing bad happens."
I still can't believe what I'm hearing. We have to look after a baby, in a house, with only a partner and a bunch of people staring at us through cameras? I can't even. But, partners didn't sound that bad. I looked at Sarah and smiled, "Partners?" I mouthed. I saw her nod right away, no way was I living with a stranger for a month.
"Alrighty, I'll go ahead and assign partners now. All the girls names are placed in this box." She pointed to a pink box with the word 'girls' onfront.
"And all the boy names are placed in this box. Luckily this class has an even amount of girls and boys, so I'll be assigning you each an apposite gender for your partner."
I felt my heart fall to the ground. No way. So I had to live in a house, with a boy, look after a month old baby and have people look at me through cameras. Shouldn't this type of project be against the law?
"Also just incase you're wondering, you will not need to attend school while doing this project." I heard a few claps and whistles as this was said. "But work will be sent to you." And then the silence again.
"Okay, let's get started." Miss. Holler put her hand in the girls box and pulled out a pieace of paper. She looked at it before reading it and picking up a piece of paper out of the boys class.
"Okay. Lucy Striplate will be with Masen Rover." Poor Lucy! Masen was the school nerd. And yes, I'm a nerd but Masen was just too nerdy. He wore huge glasses, always wore checkered clothes with a tie and when he talked his voice was all nasally. I looked at Lucy, it was like she was about to cry.
"Okay Masen come sit next to Lucy, Holly please move to Masen's old seat for the time being." They swapped around and then Miss. Holler was ready for the next partners to be assigned.
Time passed and still my name or Sarah hadn't been called. All the decent guys have been taken, left were Travis Freman, Tyson and Rowley. The other girl left was Holly Striplate.
"Okay, Holly you will be with Travis. Please sit together." Oh no. That leaves Rowley and Tyson. That means..I look to Sarah but she doesn't seem to be phased. A confused look crosses my face but I can't ask anything because Miss. Holler calls out the next partners.
"Ah, Maya you will be with Rowley. Please sit together." Yes! I didn't get Tyson! I felt like dancing, but then I realised..
"That means Sarah you are with Tyson." Poor Sarah, I felt like hugging her because this truly was going to be a horrible experience for her. But when I looked at her, she just nodded and walked over to Tyson, sitting beside him. Rowley sat beside me and I was just left there staring after Sarah. What was with her lately?
The class felt like it lasted for a year. Miss. Holler kept explaining things like 'No sexual relasionship should happen during this month'. I couldn't help but laugh. Would people even consider that knowing that they were being watched? I wouldn't. I couldn't help but keep looking over to Sarah. She seemed find, like being partnered with Tyson didn't even bother to her. If it was me, I would have been screaming until the teacher put me with someone else. But right now, I was fine. Rowley wasn't the worse partner in the world. And besides, his Mum gave birth only a few months ago to his little brother so maybe Rowley will understand what to do and will do it all. This made me cheer up slightly, maybe I'd get an A without even trying.
Suddenly the bell sounded for Second Period and I quickly gathered my things.
"This will start tomorrow, everyone. I expect your bags to be packed tonight, bring them to school with you tomorrow. See you."
Everyone pretty much sprinted out the room, it was finally over. No more health for the day. I tried to push that fact that I'd be living with Rowley for a month out of my head as I made my way to Room 8, Maths. Luckily I didn't have to walk far, just two rooms away. Pushing open the door I walked in and looked around. This class looked okay. The desks were still in pairs, but unfortunately Sarah wasn't in this class with her. I briskly walked in and took a seat near the middle. I smiled politely at my Maths teacher, Mr. Chow. He was a short, tubby man with a bushy beard and no hair. He originated from China, I believe, so he had a strong accent which was sometimes hard to understand. I had him as a Maths teacher last year.
"Good. Day. Maya." He spoke, trying to sound fluent. I nodded my head back at him and began to absentmindely tap the desk, wondering who was going to be in my class. A question came to my mind so I decided I might as well ask him now.
"Excuse me, Mr. Chow, do we have a seating plan in this class?"
I hated seating plans. It's like the teachers did it just to show that they were in control. Maya usually had to sit next to the idiots and the class clowns in hope that some of her goodness might rub off on them. Mr. Chow looked at her quickly before he answered.
"Yes, there will be seating plan. You stay. I place someone next to you."
I sighed, could this day get any worse? Finally the doors opens and a large group of teenagers entered the classroom. Most of them I didn't know, but a few I did. Holly Striplate, Rowley. That was pretty much it. And then they entered. Ben Zippleback, Luke Crimswater, Gus Zippleback and Denny Freen followed by their ever-so-amazing leader, Tyson. I feel like crying. They're all in this class, which means one of them will most likely be seated next to me. I go through them one by one. Ben is an okay guy, in a way. He has dusty blonde hair that falls over his eyes and he often needs to flick it away. He's a football players, so he's pretty big. His brother Gus is smaller, and skinnier. Gus has the same hair colour except he slicks his back. I don't like Gus, I'd prefer Ben. Luke and Denny were the worse, behind Tyson ofcourse. They were the main jokestars when Tyson wasn't around and I can't stand them.
Mr. Chow frowned as people began to sit wherever they wanted. He steadied the small glasses on his nose before he boomed,
"Alrighty. Seating plan! Seating plan! Rowley next to Denny, Ben next to Jackie, Luke next to Robert, Gus Next Jessie.." the names went on and on until I heard my name. "Maya next to Tyson."
Wait. What? Tyson? I look over to him, he's leaning against the wall, his dark hair smoothed gently across his face. I saw him look up when he heard his name and slowly, his eyes turned to me. They weren't gentle either. They were mean, and hard. I slapped my forehead as he made his way over, sitting down next to me. I edged as far away as I possible could without falling off my chair. This was going to be a long lesson.
