"An attempted murder, I'd assume."

"Yeah, maybe he couldn't get to this guy fast enough and it ended up failing."

"I mean, his entire clan was murdered on the same night, so I'm sure it has something to do with that, though it's strange that he's the only one that ended up surviving."

No one was around as I walked down the stairs of my apartment complex towards the double doors. Not the man walking his dog, or the lady that always stomped around angrily, or the guy that would always water the flowers that grew just outside of the doors.

No one was around and it terrified me because this was one day of few that I wanted to see someone. I mean, sure, I would see people in just a few minutes when I made my way out of the narrow, desolate street that connected mine to the city, but I needed reassurance now, reassurance that I wouldn't screw up anything and everything.

It was my first day of school, and while I'm usually light hearted and obnoxious, today I was nervous and I absolutely could not mess anything up.

Nevertheless, I walked swiftly with my head held high, and smiled at the one person sweeping the front of their shop. They didn't smile back. Maybe because they didn't even notice my smile.

Time seemed to speed up and what felt like seconds later I was standing in front of the school gates, looking up at the tall building.

I didn't know why I thought moving to such a big school was a good idea. From what I recall, I've never been a very bright person to begin with but surely I at least had the common sense to not do something as overwhelming as this?

I took a deep breath and for a second I held it in, and it may or may not have been because for just a second I forgot to breathe. I closed my eyes and made my way through the gates.

Another intake of breath and another million regrets I had about deciding to go to the biggest high school in the biggest city of my country. Konoha High was pretty well known, be it for the rowdiness or just the general size. It was huge.

Thankfully, I was given a tour the day I signed up, and it was thorough enough that I had an idea where each of my classes would be. School might not interest me, but I think attending and socializing with other students is what I really needed right now.

I had memorized where my first class was, which helped me loads as I tried to make my way through a crowded hallway. Pushing my way through wasn't very easy, but I made it out okay without a single scratch on my headband that was used as student identification. It seems this school has a hell of a history.

"Tobi Uchiha..." the teacher, Kakashi, mumbled as he flipped through the neatly stacked papers on his desk. His eyes (eye?) lit up and he pulled up a paper. He skimmed it quickly and pressed a stamp at the bottom. "You can go ahead and take Seat 9. Next to the blond." I flashed a smile that he couldn't see and bowed my head a bit before turning towards the seats.

There were so many tables in the room; about 9 with 4 students at each of them, and they were lined up so that every seat was facing the front of the room and not the back.

I scanned over the numbers written on the back of each chair and finally fell across Seat 9. My eyes quickly moved over to my side where a blonde boy sat with his head in his hands and his hair covering most of his face.
