how much time had passed since frisk first fell down here? they didn't know. they lost track of resets a long time ago. but finally, finally, they had done it.
not only was asriel back and safe with his parents, but they had retrieved chara.
chara, the kid who had tormented them for however long they were down here, who had used them as their puppet, was here.
they had been saved.
reluctantly, of course. they wanted to kill flowey and destroy everything, but frisk was determined to stand their ground. chara finally agreed, letting frisk do a mercy run and save asriel, breaking the barrier.
and what with gold being much more valuable on the surface, frisk quickly helped all the monsters into a safe living position.
it had definitely been a shock to the humans when the entire population of the underground migrated to the surface, turning most of them to prejudice and hate. it had taken forever for frisk to convince anyone to let them buy a house, and ended up with chara threatening a landlord with a knife to his throat, but that got him to agree.
the children stayed with toriel for the most part, although she reluctantly would let them stay with asgore, but rarely.
sans and papyrus stayed in a complex adjacent to toriel, although the older skeleton often slept over with toriel and the children.
though it took a while for everyone to settle in, they were all happy now, in their own little cozy home which housed furniture from the underground.
eventually, toriel decided the children needed to attend school. sans was the voice of reason in this matter, arguing against it.
"tori, if we send them to school, asriel will get beat up for being a monster, and chara still isn't stable." he insisted, folding his arms.
"chara can protect him, and frisk can lead them. they've been to school before," she turned to the child, "haven't you, frisk?"
frisk nodded, their hands folded neatly on their lap, legs swinging.
"toriel. this isn't a good idea, trust me."
"sans, you can't survive without schooling up here. they won't be able to get a job."
sans frowned. she was right.
"fine. but when chara gets expelled for stabbing someone, it's on your paws. hear that chara?" he called the last part, looking to where they were previously sitting.
and they weren't there.
"mom!" asriel called from the kitchen, running out. "chara found the knives!"
toriel immediately rushed to the kitchen, picking up the child and pulling them away from the knives. she made an attempt to wrestle the weapon away from them, which resulted in screaming and attempted stabbing.
frisk came into the kitchen, somehow easily taking the knife from chara and shaking their head. chara seemed to deflate with disappointment in toriel's arms.
"whyyyyyy?" frisk only shook their head again, enough to shut them up. they threw the knife onto the counter, to where neither of the children could reach.
toriel promptly set chara down. "i'll get them enrolled today." she announced. "sans, watch them while i do that."
he reluctantly nodded, ushering the children into their shared room. it was a quaint little room, three twin-sized beds, each with a nightstand and a wardrobe in the corner, along with a toy chest. frisk was really the only one who used it, chara was more interested in destroying what they built, while asriel was usually parked at the window. his bed was yellow, and a little golden flower from the underground potted on the nightstand (very well taken care of, too). chara's bed sat in the middle, their sheets also taken from the castle, fluffy and green. their bedside table was bare, but housed the real knife from the underground. frisk's was by the door, covered with a simple blue blanket. their table had both a half eaten spider donut and their favorite stick.
inside the wardrobe, their were three rows of hangers. one with multiple copies of asriel's sweater, the next with chara's, the last with a multitude of new-made sweaters for frisk. it also had a small compartment which housed the children's trousers, along with frisk's tattered pink tutu.
sans always liked this room, it somehow reminded him of his younger brother. they all plopped down in a circle.
"sans, do you bleed?" chara asked out of nowhere, making sans' brow-bones crinkle in fear.
"i don't know. i only have one hp. i've never gotten hurt."
chara perked up, standing and starting off to their bedstand. asriel and frisk grabbed either of their sleeves, forcing them to sit back down. they stuck their bottom lip out, folding their arms.
"what's your lv, kid?" sans asked carefully.
"139!" they chirped proudly, making frisk slap their own face with a disappointed sigh.
"that isn't something to be proud of, chara." asriel groaned.
"hey! yours is like, 63!" they accused, stomping their foot. asriel's skin heated under his fur. "i'm not proud of that!"
"it doesn't change it!"
sans made uncomfortable eye contact with frisk, who just waved the two off.
these guys weren't gonna last a day in public school.
