Prologue

"We've been together since high school, my love. We've had our many ups and downs, but the ups outweigh the downs. I have never loved anyone the way I love you and I cannot imagine my life without you. With that being said, Thandeka Nkhosi, will you do me the honour of being my wife and marry me?" he asked, as he presented me with a diamond ring while on bended knee.

My high school sweetheart Themba Mkhize had just asked me to marry him. I couldn't believe it. I also couldn't imagine my life without him. He's been the best thing I've had in my life and now I was going to be his wife. We had been together for ten years, but we had known each other since pre-school, and have been inseparable ever since.

Wait... wasn't I supposed to be answering him? I felt the tears cascade down my cheeks. I loved this man with everything in me.

"Yes Themba, of course I'll marry you", I replied and he slipped the ring onto my finger. The applause began and I remembered that we were on The Big Wheel in Gold Reef City with my mother, just like how I had dreamt my proposal would be like.

Themba hugged me and kissed me. He kept chanting "she said yes". I laughed along with him as he was celebrating.

"I love you", he whispered into my ear. I sighed dreamily.

"I love you", I whispered back.

"Hey there Facebook friends, on the 25th of March 2017, I asked my girlfriend of ten years to marry me and she said yes. Thank you for watching", Themba said towards my mom. My mom then stopped what I now knew was a Live video on Facebook.

I examined my Tiffany diamond ring and smiled brightly. It was so gorgeous and complemented my hand. I looked at Themba and hugged him as we got off the Big Wheel. I was the happiest woman who had ever lived, and no one could take that happiness away.

I nervously ran my hands down the length of my silky wedding dress. This was my wedding day, I could understand the nervousness, but suddenly I felt gutted. Something wasn't right. I couldn't feel Themba anymore.

I left my room in search of my mother. I found her in the kitchen. She saw me crying and hurriedly came to hold me in her arms.

"Baby, are you okay? Are these wedding jitters?" she asked and I shook my head.

"I can't feel him anymore, momma", I told her sobbing. "I can't feel my Themba anymore, momma". She hugged me and told me not to stress. I pulled back as my phone rang.

"Hello Tshepo, what's up?" I asked upon answering the phone.

"We can't find Themba, Thandeka", he replied. The earth stopped spinning.

"What?"

"Yes, we've looked everywhere and we can't find him", he said.

"I'll go search for him", I replied and disconnected the call. "See momma? I told you I couldn't feel him anymore. I need to go find him", I said frantically. I gathered up my dress and started searching the entire lodge for him.

When I couldn't find him, my gut feeling told me to go search for him at our wedding marquee. As I entered, I saw a trail of blood drops from the entrance on the white carpet I was supposed to walk on in order to marry Themba.

I followed the drops and they ended in a pool beneath the motionless body of the love of my life. I sensed my mother's presence behind me and I knew she was watching me. I let out a deep and loud cry.

Who would do this to him?

(5 Hours Later)

The police arrived and were now questioning me about the murder of my fiancé. I didn't have straight answers for them, and I could tell that they didn't believe that I had felt that Themba wasn't alright. They kept asking me questions like I was the one who had murdered him. As I looked at the look on my mother's face, I knew I had to run away.

That night after I was taken back to my home in Westonaria, I packed a backpack with some essentials, I withdrew enough money so that I would be able to disappear from the radar, and in the middle of the night, I got into my car, and drove.

I am Thandeka Nkhosi and this is the story of my life On The Run.
