She felt her shoes sink into the cold sand as she walked behind Tommy. Adalene tried to soak up everything that was happening on the shore.

She was harshly thrown out of her thoughts when she heard the loud engines of a Luftwaffe plane as it soared overhead. Her body suddenly hit the ground as Tommy wrapped an arm around her.

For a moment she was frozen in fear, but feeling Tommy's arm around her made her feel safe and secure. She covered her head while mumbling a silent prayer.

One, two, three, four. She counted the bombs being dropped. The last one was so close that flying sand and debris landed on top of their heads.

"Tommy?", she whispered. Adalene was worried, for the bombs could have killed him. She shuddered thinking about Tommy dying. He did save her after all.

"Adalene, are you ok?", he sounded so worried. She nodded as he helped her up. He gave her a small reassuring smile which calmed her down instantly.

"Yes I'm alright", hoping it sounded convincing. "Look, they're loading the ships. Follow me, I have an idea", Tommy spoke as he made his way to an empty stretcher.

Before they could do anything, they both noticed a soldier burying his friend in the sand nearby. "I, um I should help him", Tommy whispered. Adalene nodded, understanding the pain that both soldiers felt.

She stood near them mumbling a prayer for the lost solider. Her heart ached for his wife or his lover. She felt a tear slide down her check as she imagined the feeling of his loved ones receiving the dreaded telegram.

After all, she did receive one informing her that her older brother was missing in action. Adalene quickly wiped her tears and turned around. There was no time for the pain of the past, but only the happiness of the future.

When Tommy heard the sound of the bomber overhead, he instantly felt the urge to make sure Adalene was safe. He didn't care what happened to him. He needed to save the girl with golden hair and ocean blue eyes.

He pulled her to the ground wrapping an arm around her small figure. Pulling her closer he prayed that, at least Adalene would be spared the gruesome death.

The last blast felt like it shook his core. Sand and debris landed in his hair. After a minute, he let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding in. "Tommy?" He heard her angelic voice whisper.

He was so glad she was alright. He was bewildered by the growing feeling in his heart. "Adalene, are you ok?" he was so worried that she was hurt.

"Yes I'm alright", those three words calmed Tommy down instantly. He grabbed her hand and helped her up. He knew that he needed to save her. He needed to make sure she would be safe. Safe and alive.

"Look, they're loading the ships. Follow me, I have an idea" he knew the only way of keeping her safe was getting her on the ship, even if it meant he would never see her again.

The only way he could accomplish that is by pretending she was an injured civilian. He spotted an empty stretcher near the small sand dunes. As they both approached the stretcher, Tommy noticed another solider.

The solider was burying another man. Flashbacks from his time in the trenches hit him like a ton of bricks. He needed to help him. "I, um I should help him" he stuttered as he began walking in the solider direction.

As we was helping him, he noticed Adalene's silent prayer. He also noticed her tears. Seeing her cry was like getting his heart ripped open. He knew it was wrong and that he shouldn't fall for the broken girl, but yet his heart didn't listen.
