It was an ordinary day at Molly's diner and Kyle was rushing from one booth to another, scrawling down orders on a notepad too tiny for his hands.
Only eight in the morning and the place was brimming with sweaty people, mostly tourists. Although this was Kyle's fourth summer vacation that would be spent working at the Molly's, he still couldn't help but wonder why anyone would waste their time and money to visit this boring little town of Estherfalls.
Crazy people, he thought as he slid the orders across the counter to Victor who's passed them to the chefs, turned around and winked at a passing girl.
He was twenty, exactly two years older than Kyle but never acted his age.And here Kyle was killing himself over work.on occasions He wished he could switch places with him but until he realized vic had a peanut brain.
Just as Kyle was wondering what he had done to deserve this hell, Calla arrived with empty dishes and an angry expression which got angrier when her coffee colored eyes landed on the two boys.
"Hot." said Victor.
"What did I do?" All the noise and clatter was making Kyle a bit irritable. He didn't want to spend his summer here.
"Nothing! I have been working my ass of all day." Calla started and Kyle knew this was going to turn into a five hour lecture.
"We only opened an hour ag-" said Victor with a goofy grin on his face.
"And this place is already falling apart. Wonderful!" She said with no hint of happiness in her voice.
Victor looked like he was barely holding back his laughter.
"Maybe if you didn't spend your working hours gawking at girls and if you"she turned to kyle "were a bit fast we wouldn't be losing customers."
"Chill, it's not like they're dying of hunger" said Kyle.
"I'm surprised they already haven't." Calla narrowed her eyes and with a quick angry twirl she was gone.
"I hate this place." Kyle said mostly to himself.
"But your still here. Its ok to let your true feelings of love show pal." Victor exclaimed, raking a hand through his dirty blond hair.
"Sorry to break it to you pal, but the only reason I'm here is the cash." Kyle said and noticed how he was starting to talk like Calla. It was like her sass was contagious.
"Ouch" Victor said as a waitress came placed like ten dishes on the counter."Time to work."
"You do realize we need more staff." Kyle said, eyeing the dishes and contemplating suicide.
"Yea a new employee is supposed to come in today." Victor said and then there was a loud crash coming from somewhere near the entrance.
"Oh and there she is" said Victor.
Kyle turned around and the first thing he saw was a girl with hazel eyes , blonde hair and a nervous smile as she let out a high pitched sound that roughly translates to "eeeeeep ops." It was the most beautiful sound Kyle heard that day.
And the second thing he saw was a really angry Calla on the floor with spaghetti in her hair and a random dude talking her photo to share on social media.
"Let me help you with that" the girl said picking out strands of long saggy noodles from calla's head with shaking hands as Kyle watched in horror.
"What a loser!" Said some kid. And in the moment Kyle agreed.
But a month from now the tables would turn.
