The bus honks impatiently outside. I sit up, as the reality of the intense likelihood of being late to school, dawns upon me, as it had done every morning for a long time.
"Avery!! The bus is here! Let's go!"
My bedroom door is flung open hastily as a very scrunched-up face peers through at me. "Up!" My Aunt Janet spits the word at me. On the way out, I heard her mutter disapprovingly to herself, "I did not sign up for this."
Ok, beanie on to cover up my wild blonde sea of hair, sweatshirt on over PJs, and unwashed black jeans fumbled into, I grabbed my bag, my phone, my keys, and the letter with my name on that my converse crinkled, and yelled, "Bye! Leaving for school!"
"Oi!" A soggy, buttered piece of toast hits me in the face and flops solemnly onto the floor. "Breakfast.".
I huff, pick the toast up from the floor, and slam the door behind me.
"Not even a thank you from this kid. I swear to god, if she's late again tomorrow, I will be throwing hot coffee at her. Ungrateful kid." Aunt Janet shakes her head at her husband Derek, and they both scowl in disapproval.
"Great." I scoff. The bus has gone without me, meaning that I have to get to school in the rain on foot. Nah. I grab my little cousin James' bike from the shed, and leave for school, peddling awkwardly, knees coming up to my neck, as my hair matts in the rain.
