Sang is chosen for the Culling, a series of fights to the death that are generally played by men. In fact, Sang is the first woman selected, well, ever. As the games start, and Sang forms bonds with a group of nine men, she comes to realize that the...
Luke muttered out an agreement and I was suddenly lifted into the air as Silas stood up. Luke went ahead of us and pulled down the blankets and the two of them climbed into bed with me, laying me in the middle with such care that it made me want to cry.
I felt like a child. I was ashamed of myself and felt completely useless. Tears filled my eyes as I thought back to how completely ridiculous I was currently acting. They literally had to save me again, and sleep with me in bed. If I wasn't in physical pain then why couldn't I act normally? It's not like I hadn't been hurt before in my life.
At the same time I felt warm and safe. I was facing Luke and I could see that the playfulness of his eyes was currently subdued. He was concerned as he watched me. I did not like that look on him. Silas' large body was wrapped around my back, in between me and the wall, and he held me against his chest.
Luke looked like he wanted to say something, but was holding himself back.
"Luke?"
He shrugged off the expression, snuggled up to my front and kissed my forehead. "Not right now. Go to sleep Cupcake." At his touch all of the anxiety and conflicting feelings that had been overwhelming me, at least those that were not mine, vanished and I felt alone again.
I wanted to sleep, but I was so sorry. So worried. Would we get in trouble for what I had done to Jade? What was going to happen with Mr McCoy? It was me that he hated, and now I had brought all the boys into it. There was no way that I was worth that, and no way that I could relax.
Then Sean was there. "Pookie, I'm going to help you sleep, alright?"
I watched him as he leaned over Luke and put his hand over my eyes, an action that made me flinch slightly as I remembered Jade doing the same thing. The fear was short lived though because I knew that it was Sean, and he'd never do anything to hurt me. I knew that he felt my momentary hesitation because after I relaxed I heard a sigh of relief from him as well.
"Sweetheart," He told me, "Go to sleep. We'll be here when you wake up."
Between his encouragement, and the comforting presence of Luke and Silas, my poor, abused body offered no resistance and my eyes closed. Before I knew it, I was out.
