A/N: Sorry the story takes a little bit to pick up. Enjoy!
John Winchester had disappeared. No sign of him. No phone calls. No nothing.
It was normal for John to be gone for days at a time with no warning. His three sons had learned how to get by without him, but three teenage boys could only handle so much on their own.

Ever since the death of his second wife, Kate Milligan, John had been completely distraught. He downed cheap whiskey by the bottle and sometimes never came home. He started to ramble about ghosts and demons, saying that Kate's death hadn't been caused by a car crash, but a ghoul.
At first, John's behavior was kind of expected, this being the second wife of his that died. He was only trying to convince himself that she couldn't be gone. But then came the drinking, the obsession, the unexpected trips, the neglect of his children. It all came slowly but John couldn't get any help. He wasted all of his money on gambling.

Four Years Ago
It was the seven year anniversary of John and Kate's marriage and John had a special dinner set up. He expected Kate to be home by 7:00 but the clock kept ticking away. John bit his fingernails as he sent text after text, call after call. She never answered. John thought she stood him up.
Near midnight he got a phone call. Thinking it was Kate, he picked it up eagerly. A muffled female voice started speaking.
"Mr. Winchester? It's Anna from the hospital." Anna was one of Kate's friends from work. John heard a sob from the other line. "I'm so sorry John, I really am, but there's been a crash involving-"
John hung up and snatched his keys from the counter. He got into his beautiful glossy black 1967 Chevy Impala and pulled out of the garage. The kids were already asleep so he wouldn't have to worry about them. His head was buzzing as he sped to the hospital, running several red lights and breaking the speed limit. He came to a screeching halt in the hospital parking lot and then ran inside.
"Where is Kate Winchester? What's the room number?" John demanded to the lady at the front counter. He was afraid he'd break down in tears if he said much more. The woman checked her computer before pointing down the hall towards room 209.
John ran and slammed open the door and froze. Oh, Kate, baby...
Kate had several tubes attached to her. There was the steady beeping of the heart monitor. A constant drip-drip of the IV. A blood bag was hooked up to her. She looked so pale, paper white, completely unlike the joyous woman he kissed on the way out the door this morning.
Oh no Kate, what... Why? God hates me. Haven't I had to suffer enough? John kneeled by Kate's side and held her delicate hand. He kissed her forehead as a single tear slid down his face.
He looked up to see a puffy eyed woman with reddish hair enter the room. "Oh, John, why did this have to happen to Kate?" Anna started to sob as John stood up to hold her. They cried together beside Kate's bed.

3:19 am, Four Years Ago
John had later been told that Kate had crashed into a ditch due to an eighteen wheeler. If somebody reported the crash earlier, she could be conscious at the moment, but the amount of blood loss was too great. That plus the brain injury she suffered meant that there was nearly no way she could come out of this alive.
"It's a miracle her heart's still beating, really," the doctor said. John looked at him through his hands. His eyes were bloodshot.
"Thank you doctor," John said, keeping his cool. He didn't have enough energy to do anything.
Ten years ago he came to accept that what happened, happened. There was no changing the past. That horrible night when Mary died on the ceiling...
No. I will not get sucked into the past, John thought to himself. He could only wait until Kate took her last breath, the last time her heart pumped blood, the last time the monitor made the sound that meant Kate was still there, in John's arms.
Beep-beep.
Beep-beep.
Beep-beep.
Beeeeeeeeeeee-
The doctor and Anna rushed in.
"Time of death 3:28 am."
