James Barnes watches the borrowed plane sink into the dark hills, catching fire from somewhere ahead and eventually explode in a fantastic ball of flames.
He meets Steve's eyes, and grins "Kaboom! Kaboom! Kaboom!"
Steve's own grin stretches even wider.
Sharon, already having folded and stowed one of the planes two parachutes, stomps onto the thick brush.
"If you two are done with your self congratulations-" she calls back.
"After you" James tells Steve.
The two men trail after Sharon like naughty school boys, sniggering and cutting up.
She doesn't discourage them, if they find what they're looking for there will be precious little to make them laugh.
The crest of the hill is topped by a single watchtower and all around it the forest has been clear cut, making it impossible to sneak up on them.
Steve purses his lips "You guys go. I'll draw fire."
"Ste-eve" James voice has a note of irritation.
Steve's expression is grim "Just go!"
James gives his friend a meaningful look and they burst into the clearing.
Steve charges forward, shield first, like a literal target for all of the sentries to see.
The gunfire starts immediately and Steve tries not to think too much about it.
"We're in, Steve" James voice is in his ear "West side of the building."
"Copy that!" Steve flings the shield wide slamming into the gate guards.
One of them manages to squeeze off a shot before he falls, and Steve cries out.
"Steve?" James sounds worried "What happened?"
Steve grimaces and presses his glove into the wound to stop the flow of blood "Bullet in my shoulder. I'm fine!"
"Forget it!" James snaps "Sharon and I are on our way. Don't do anything stupid! I don't care if you have a healing factor!"
Gingerly, Steve touches the bullet wound.
Wasn't this uniform supposed to be bullet proof? Why was he suddenly tired?
Gritting his teeth, he forces the stray bullet from his shoulder, gasping in pain.
Nothing's hurt this bad since the serum....
The Captain sighs heavily and draws the edge of the shield across the mechanical lock to the main door.
"I'm in" Steve huffs "Where are you?"
"Three guards headed toward the main gate." Sharon says "Closing in.. Three.. two-"
Steve hurls the shield down the hall and listens for the familiar thump of bodies.
