I bowed my head. "I'm sorry."

George shrugged it off. "Anyways, Herc and Laf are right behind us. They'll be here in a few minutes."

Peggy rolled her eyes. "Are they bringing all six kids?"

Angelica laughed. "No, just Mimi." Eliza's son Philip seemed to perk up at that.

Just on cue, Herc and Laf's car pulled up, and the three stepped out. Mimi immediately ran over to Philip, giving him a hug hello as they began to chat animatedly. Herc chuckled at the sight of them.

"Eliza, we met have a romance on our hands here." Laf joked. Eliza smiled and brushed her hair behind her ear. We all exchanged hellos, and then silence fell upon the group.

Angelica was the first to speak up. "I think it's time we see our old friend, right?" We all nodded slowly, lacing hands and walking together down the trail to where Alex was resting. We looked upon the gravestones before I finally spotted the one that belonged to my ex boyfriend.

"Guys. There." I pointed to where his gravestone stood. Eliza pressed a hand to her mouth when she saw someone already standing there.

"Aaron Burr?" She asked. He turned around, eyes red with tears. "Oh." He wiped his face with the back of his hand. "Sorry. I just wanted to come see him....I wasn't at the funeral."

Herc crossed his arms. "Yeah, why was that?"

Burr rolled his eyes. "I was in jail, you asshole." His eyes looked over to Mimi and Philip, who had clamped their hands over their ears. "Oh...sorry."

"Why were you in jail?" I questioned.

"None of your damn business." Burr shot back. "Technically I should still be in jail, but they....they let me out early. My fianc -" He paused and took a breath. "My ex-fiancé passed away three weeks ago. She left all her money to me, even though we'd been broken up for years. For me to get out of jail, to start a new life."

We all fell silent as Burr choked back tears.

"Would you like to join us?" Peggy finally offered. "We're going to stay here for a while, then go get lunch."

"You don't have to be alone, Aaron." Laf added.

Aaron shook his head. "No, thank you. I...I'll let you be." He turned to get one last look at Alex's grave before walking off. That was the last time any of us ever saw Aaron Burr.

"Philip, Mimi." George Washington turned to look at the two kids once Burr had disappeared. "You can wait back here, if you want. We'll only be a few minutes." The two kids nodded, keeping quiet, seeming to understand the seriousness of the situation.

The seven of us stepped forward to the grave, led by me. I knelt to the ground in front the grave, tracing my hands over the words engraved on it. A man whose dreams were as countless as the stars.

No one talked. No one wanted to talk. No one really wanted to be there.  All we wanted was a different ending. But we don't have control over that, do we?

I dreamt about Alex that night.

"How many." He begged me, eyes wide.

Freckles. I skimmed my hands over my face. "I don't know." I admitted.

"No, John!" He shouted, pointing at the ground. I looked down and saw my body lying on the shitty hotel bed, my mouth gaping open, an empty pill bottle clenched in my fist. "How many did you take?"

"I....I don't know." I broke down into tears. I immediately felt Alex's skinny arms wrap themselves around me, pulling my ice cold body to his chest.

"Shhhh." He rocked me back and forth. "Hey, it's okay."

I shook my head. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to do it. I didn't want to die. I just wanted...." what did I want? I wanted Alex, but not like this.

"Do you want to go back?" Alex asked me, looking down at my dead body sprawled on the bed. I shook my head. "No...it's hard. It's too hard."

"Life isn't supposed to be easy." He shot back.

"Yeah, well dying wasn't that great either." I sighed. "Did it hurt? When you....left."

Alex grabbed my face and gave me a long, slow kiss. "No." He said once we had broken apart. "It didn't hurt at all. But John....you can still go back. It's your choice."

I shook my head again. "No. No. It's time. Let's....let's go home."

Alex took my hand and pulled me up to the sky, to the stars.
