21 | A message in a bottle

Start from the beginning

Although we knew they really just didn't want us to win.

"They look like freaking Calvin Klein models," Mia whispered to me as we changed out of our cover-ups so we were left in our bikinis, "Is it weird that I think that about my best friends?"

"Not at all" I replied before we walked down to the shore where the water hit our feet,

Dylan and Kyle were busy trying to drown each other, which we should be a lot more concerned about, but oh well.

Liam and Chase were seeing who could hold their breath the longest, again we should probably be more concerned about since the brothers were both incredibly competitive but meh.

Noah and Megan were standing next to each other floating in the ocean quietly conversing and Mia and I smiled knowingly at each other,

"Let's go!" Mia said to me dragging me into the water but the further it got the colder my body felt as we went underwater.

My teeth chattered, "It's so cold!" I complained standing where the water was barely touching my hips and Mia laughed at me as she swam outwards towards the rest of the gang.

I slowly backed out until I noticed there was no one there but Megan. I frowned, where'd they all go?

Shit.

How didn't I see this com-

Suddenly I was lifted into the air and somebody threw me deeper into the ocean,

I resurfaced spluttering all the water I swallowed.

I looked at Noah, Dylan, Kyle, Chase and Liam standing there laughing at me,

"You're all assholes".

We spent the rest of the day at the beach, only after the sunset we got out of the water and just sat down enjoying the view.

We lay down in the soft sands watching as the sun went down over time. I loved watching sunsets they were so incredibly breathtaking. In the horizon the sky was dyed a beautiful orangey pink hue, the sun dipped down behind the now calm ocean, the wind still blew calming us with a cool breeze.

"Hey look a message in a bottle!" Mia said excitedly running down the shore where it sat, she grabbed it and called us over to read it with her grinning.

We stood up dusting off the sand from our previous positions, we walked back down to the shore where Mia was standing. Suddenly she dropped the bottle and the note after she read it, it made us walk ten times faster.

The sun was casting a shadow over her so you could only see her silhouette but you could tell from her demeanour that something was obviously wrong. She looked out towards the ocean where a figure bobbed up to the surface, floating towards the shore.

It was weird since we were the only ones on the beach and I hadn't even noticed there were people with us but from the expressions on everyone's' faces around me...something was off.

Mia let out a loud cry of sheer terror and in an instant we were at her side.

Only then did I realise what was happening.

I was knee deep in the water and next to my feet was the bottle Mia was holding moments before, the note was floating next to it.

"His soul isn't the one that's going to need saving – Elliot"

I froze,

I looked back up to see the speechless expressions on everyone else's faces and I followed their gaze to where they were looking at.

It was at the figure that was floating scarily close to us, but now I could see him closely.

His eyes were open making it look like he was awake but there was a tight rope-like line around his neck and he wasn't moving.

I gasped loudly, it felt like all of the breath was sucked out of me. Noah spun me around and pulled me into his chest, hugging me tightly to comfort me as well as to ensure I wouldn't turn back around.

I tried to rid my mind of the image of the body but it was almost impossible,

That man was dead and Elliot killed him.
