Treasure Hunt - Prologue
I walked with a slight limp to my car, just a little ways down from the house I'd exited as fast as my overused body – my legs still quivering – could take me. The air's chilly, seeing as it's early September, but the rips in my clothing don't help as I tremble.
I finally make it to my Jeep and by the time I grasp my lanyard from the pocket of my skinny jeans, my hands are shaking so hard, I nearly drop them against the asphalt. I quickly climbed inside after unlocking it and made sure to lock it and my windows.
I tried to catch my breath as I started the engine and put it in drive. I couldn't drive faster than maybe 15 miles per hour, I wasn't able to force my leg down any harder than I already was.
When I reached my destination, I shut the engine off and slowly climbed back out. I locked it again after taking the duffel bag out from my backseat and proceeded to the front door. I knocked with all my strength, which wasn't much.
"Honestly, I thought you'd cancelled on...Dalton? Dalton, Jesus Christ, what the hell happened to you?"
It was then that she caught me, just as I had toppled over.
