“Then where did you get the it?”
“My uncle. It has kinda worn off since my parents told him not to be around me any more. It was a couple years before this outbreak, when my parents said that he was a ‘bad influence’,” she says using air quotes with her fingers.
“Do you think he was?”
“Hell no. He never did anything bad around me.”
“Well that”-I yawn- “sucks.”
“You need rest if we are going to be leaving tomorrow.”
“So do you.”
“All I do is sit in this chair.”
“You still need to sleep too.”
“Whatever good night Mason. I will wake you when it’s time”
“Good night Dylann. Get some sleep.”
I lay my head on the blue pillow and listen to her foot steps as she walks out but I never hear the door click because I’m already asleep.
~~~~
“Hey. Mason, wake up.” I hear a whisper from beside me.
“No, five more minutes mom.” I roll over on my right side so I face the wall and her a chuckle.
“Mason. It’s Dylann. Wake up, we need to start moving or we will lose daylight hours.”
“Oh, fine. I’m up.” I roll back over onto my left and open my eyes. My vision is flooded with blue and green and gray.
“Woah. Moving too quickly there slick,” but she grins anyways.
“I never noticed the green in your eyes.”
“A lot of people don’t. It looks like a torrets, five year old tried drawing a green circle around my pupil.”
I chuckle at the thought and look into her eyes. Dylann rocks back onto her heels and looks and me through a screen of hair.
“We need to get going.”
“But it’s so early. What time even is it?” I ask glancing to the watch on her wrist.
“Five thirty.”
“Jeepers man we can sleep a little longer.”
“No we need to get pretty far and your leg is going to slow us down a lot.”
“How far are we going exactly?”
“You ask too many questions. You also talk too much. Manchester in Oklahoma.”
“Wow that’s a long distance.” I swallow hard thinking of the long walk and the throbbing already starting in my leg.
“We should be there by seven-ish.” She pats the side of the bed, standing up. “So let’s get a move on or I’m leaving your lazy bum here.”
Dylann walks out and I scramble to put on clothes.
~~~~
“Dylann! Damn it, I’m tired and my leg is throbbing can we please stop!” I yell at her even though she is only five feet ahead of me.
“Calm down Mason. There should be somewhere to sit up here.” She jogs ahead and I just keep walking. Eventually she comes jogging back smirking. “There is a restaurant up there a little ways with outdoor chairs.”
“Stop being so smug, you bastard.” I am panting and yet I walk faster to make it to the chair quicker.
“Here let me help.” Dylann weaves her arm under mine and I lean against her.
