Getting Back at 'Mr Right'
Call Me Maybe
Walking back to my car I realised what had just happened and smiled. I’d just faced James and didn’t back down; I didn’t go back to him like Kaira thought I would. My smile grew even more when the image of his face when I’d told him about mine and Lucas’ date came to my mind, and I tried hard not to giggle but soon gave up and let out a loud laugh. People stared at me in utter confusion, but I didn’t care. I was happy.
I pulled out my keys and unlocked Fiona, opening the door and putting the key in the ignition, making her engine purr. Craving the taste of a Starbucks, I reversed out of my parking spot and drove for five minutes until I reached my favourite coffee shop. I text Kaira to ask if she wanted anything, but got no reply, so just shrugged my shoulders and headed towards the clear glass doors.
Only a few people were there, so I headed straight to the counter to place my order of a simple Hot Chocolate. I payed for my drink and waited for it to be made, before picking it up and heading towards the exit. I wasn’t looking where I was going and soon found myself apologising to someone I didn’t think I’d see again.
“I am so sorry!” I frantically tried to clean up the cream that spilled onto his shirt but gave up when I noticed nothing was going away.
“Milly?” At the sound of my name, I quickly tilted up my head to find myself face to face with James’ brother, Will.
* * *
“I haven’t seen you in forever Mills!” He picked me up and hugged me tightly, spinning me in a circle and making me laugh.
“I know, how have you been?” My feet finally back on solid ground, I finally decided to talk to him.
“I’m great! But, erm, how are you doing? You know, after everything…” He trailed off and looked at me sympathetically, something I wish he wouldn’t do.
“I’m fine Will, honestly” I told him laughing, hoping he would see how happy I am.
“Well, okay then” He smiled brightly at me, then asked me if I would stay and have our drinks together. My reply was yes.
“So what’s my favourite girl been up to?” He winked at me, making me laugh at his charming ways. He was always like this, saying if James hadn’t have got there first, he would be the one I was with.
“Not much, I’ve got a date tomorrow though” Winking, I told him about how it had come about and who it was with. However, as soon as I even mentioned going on a date with someone, his face dropped and his eyes turned sad. It went so quickly that I thought I’d imagined the emotion in his eyes.
“Seems you’re moving on then?” He cast his eyes down, before tilting his head back up again and looking me in the eyes, making me gasp for breath. How had I not noticed how beautiful they were before?
“Well, erm, you know.. It’s only a date so, anything could, well, happen really” I trailed off and tried my hardest to look away from his intense gaze, finding it hard to breath. I needed to escape, before I said something inappropriate.
“I better get going, I was supposed to meet Kaira and go out with her. I hope you don’t mind.” I told him, before pulling out my phone and texting Kaira, asking if she was home.
“No of course not! You go, it’s fine” He smiled brightly at me. “Just take this will you?” He handed me a napkin with his name on it, something he must have written whilst I was distracted by my phone.
“Sure, thanks. See you later Will” Standing up, I hugged him and left the coffee shop, wondering what the hell was wrong with me.
* * *
All the way home, I thought about my reactions in the coffee place and what could have brought them on. James and Will looked alike, I could have just maybe thought about how James used to be with me and how I felt back then. That must have been it. There was absolutely no way I could feel something for his brother, no way at all.
I climbed out of my car, feeling the cold breeze hit my bare arms, making me wrap them around my body in an attempt to keep warm. Quickly, I walked up to the front of the apartment building, noticing the absence of our frequent doorman, Paul. I’m guessing it was his day off. Not really needing someone to open the door for me anyway, I walked inside and into the elevator, heading up to Kaira’s apartment and, well I guess, mine as well.
What I saw next was something I tried my very best not to smile at. Kaira, sat on the sofa, making out with - you guessed it - Paul. Just a fling, hey Kaira? Coughing lightly, I made my presence known, which ended with Kaira turning her head away from Paul and towards the entrance to her apartment. Even from my distance from her, I could see the faint blush making it’s way onto her face.
“Milly! You’re back early!” She said, stumbling on her words and standing from the couch, trying to act as though nothing was going on.
I tried to stifle my laughter. “Oh it’s fine, ignore me. I’m just going to head to my room and leave you two to it.” I winked over at them and noticed Paul looking at me gratefully; he must really like her.
I headed in the direction of my room, trying my best to cover my giggle with my hand, but failing miserably. Kaira sure worked fast, I’d only been out for an hour or so. After shutting the door behind me, I headed to my laptop, opening it to check my emails. But after a couple of minutes, I heard my door open again and someone come rushing in.
“How much did you see?” Kaira asked me quietly, casting her gaze to the ground and twisting her feet like a little girl in trouble.
“Enough” I told her. “So, you and Paul huh?” I smiled and began walking over to her.
“Oh please, it’s just a fling Mills. You know me.” She rolled her eyes, but failed to hide the colour rushing to her cheeks.
“You’re right, I do know you. Which is how I know that you never have a ‘fling’ with the same guy, twice.” Holding up two fingers, I grinned wickedly at her, knowing I’d caught her.
“Oh shush” She tried to brush my comment off, but soon I found a small smile make its way onto her porcelain face.
“Kaira! You like him!” I grabbed her hands and started doing my signature happy dance, one I’d created when we were still at high school. I know what you’re thinking - she is one cool girl.
“Okay fine. I like Paul” She finally admitted. Wow, I never thought she’d actually confess to it. Never did Kaira Mayfield like a guy enough to see him twice, let alone would she own up to it. “I just don’t think he likes me like that” She frowned and her whole face just went sad.
“Trust me Kaira, he does.”
