Edwardian sentinels
Gaze upon our solitary walk
Along Hollywood Street, like doting grandparents.
Screens of rose, cherry, columbine and maple,
Frame the sunlit faces of these elegant dignitaries,
Wrapped in their finest lace verandahs
Resembling a wedding cake iced with sugary fretwork.
Their top hats sparkle, steep and gabled,
Some pinned with ornamental chimney.
The weekend is sleeping in
Behind plantation shutters
Squinting, as
Children and pets cocooned within
Wallpaper gardens,
Dream of steaming tea, croissants, soft doggy bones and most certainly love.
Two plump new days each filled with delicious anticipation of
Fizzy popping possibilities,
Stretch forward
Through waking limbs.
