12 | The Cherry on Top

Start from the beginning

"So you have the ice cream out front here" she said pointing to the tubs on ice cream lining to counter top and on the other side of the counter was a large sheet of glass covering them. She turned a small dial underneath the counter,

"We switch this off at the end of everyday and put the remaining ice cream in the freezer in the back, this if for soft serves" she points to a large machine with a lever, "the ice cream tubs need be refilled everyday and again you'll find them in the freezer, remember to put the correct ice creams next to the correct names".

"You'll find all the orders up here" she said pointing to the billboard above our heads which had lines and lines of different ice cream flavours, "the cones are in the back and so are the cups and spoons" she finished smiling.

"We have a telephone for people with inquiries or complaints, you probably don't need to worry about that I'll look after it but in case I'm not here just greet them politely and ask them what they need" I nodded as she continued to show me how to work the cash register.

"Look! Here's the first customer of today, make me proud!" she whispered and stood back.

"Hi welcome to Cherry on Top what can I-"

"Lexie!" a young girl who I recognised to be Beth squealed before I could finish.

"Hi Beth!" I beamed and looked over at Christina who was occupied on the phone, she was looking at her feet and smiling widely making me think that whoever was on the other end was no ordinary customer, "What are you doing here?"

"Ice cream, duh" she giggled at me,

"Pffft yeah I knew that" I brushed off casually,

"Of course you did" another voice sounded from the doorway and when I looked up I saw Logan standing there with a shit-eating grin.

He wore jeans with a tight fitting shirt that accentuated his body and I couldn't even imagine how many girls he had fawning over him.

"Done checking me out?" he mused walking over towards Beth who was eyeing the ice cream hungrily, my cheeks grew hot and I felt like it could melt the ice cream from where I was standing.

"Get over yourself Ryder" I retorted leaning against the counter,

"Your mouth keeps saying something but your eyes say otherwise" he said and I quickly diverted my gaze.

"Whatever, what do you want?"

"Is that how you talk to a customer? Besides since when did you work here?" he smirked,

"Today is my first day actually"

"You're not making a very good first impression"

"Shut up" and he chuckled.

"Can I get a fairy floss and chocolate ice cream please, with waffles cones and no toppings" Logan said and I nodded.

I got two waffle cones from the cupboard under the counter where we restocked them and scooped the chocolate and fairy floss ice cream into the cones before I gave Beth the fairy floss and Logan the chocolate.

As soon as I handed it to them they swapped them with each other and Beth licked her ice cream happily while I cocked an eyebrow at Logan.

"Fairy floss?" I smirked at him,

"What? It's my favourite flavour" he defended with a pout while I smiled at him.

"That'll be $10.50" I told him and he handed me the money.

"Thanks Alex!" Beth said before waving at me as they walked out,

As I was putting the money in the cash register a thought popped into my mind,

"Hey Logan!" I called out as he reached the door and he spun around, "i-is everyone okay?"

He looked confused for a second before realisation dawned on him and his mouth formed an 'o', "yeah everyone's fine" he replied before walking out of the store.

Suddenly the phone rang interrupting the blanket of silence that had covered the shop and making my heart jump from the surprise. I looked around for Christina who had seemingly vanished half way through the conversation Logan and I had.

I decided to answer the phone since I didn't see Christina coming for it.

"Hi thanks for calling The Cherry on To-"

"Are you Australian?" a voice asked on the other end of the phone, "because you meet all of my koalafications"

"Huh?"

***

Monday morning was not something I was looking forward too so like any normal teenager I had to master the art of procrastination. I sat in front of my television refusing to do my homework from last week because apparently sitting down at 11:00 in the night watching Friends was much more important than my education.

Okay so the real reason why I was sitting in my pyjamas with a messy bun and stuffing my face with skittles while Monica and Rachel bicker back and forth is because Noah hasn't come home yet and he wasn't answering my texts.

Then at 11:30 the front door opened to reveal Noah who looked seemingly okay, a huge wave of relief washed over me.

I didn't say anything as he trudged upstairs, still giving me the cold shoulder.

I relaxed considerably and I let out a loud yawn resting my head on the armrest of the couch. I didn't intend to fall asleep here but when sleep called I didn't refuse.

Half into my slumber I noticed footsteps approaching but my tired eyes did not feel like opening whatsoever. I acknowledged the TV being switched off and the warmth of a blanket that covered me, before drifting off into a much needed sleep I felt a small a peck on my forehead and Noah's voice,

"Goodnight Alex".
