A New Beginning

There was no sign of human life in the grove, just the blackness of the night and the swaying of the trees. All was peaceful and quiet until seven hooded figures made their way into the middle of the grove, all coming from different directions. One of the hooded figures waved their hand and all the vines and weeds in the grove dispersed and receded back into the earth. Another figure across from the first then took out a knife that seemed delicate yet deadly. The knife had gems on the handle that were gleaming with joy from the light of the moon. The figure then proceeded with cutting their wrist, holding it above the ground and letting the blood drop on the earth. Once seven little droplets touched the ground, a circle with symbols appeared, and all eight figures stepped onto the circle and chanted:

O dea magiae, in diebus nostris defendat ex necessitate, diligamus nos diligere eos qui nos ruinam et percutiat eos qui resistunt veritati

All seven figures stood still as if waiting for something to happen, but when nothing happened they all grunted and took off their hoods.

"Nothing happened," said the figure from the north, taking off her hood.

"Yes I saw, I was present," sarcastically said the figure from the south.

"You wasted our time for nothing!" screamed the figure from the north.

" Shut up you baboon, you'll wake the entire village if you scream like that!" said the south witch, quietly screaming.

"You're the baboon!" she screamed, walking up to her fellow witch.

" You really want to do this you little-"

"Shut up, both of you! Unless you want to hang from the Weeping Willow," said the witch from the southeast.

The two arguing witches looked at each other as if a ghost was right in front of their eyes.

"Maybe we need an eighth member, to complete the magical directions, we need an East," exclaimed the figure coming from the northwest.

"Maybe....but who would want to risk the chance of being hung, just for us, we would need a miracle."

After a little bit, they decided to leave the meeting earlier than usual, disappointed at their failed encantation. As they were walking to go back home, the same witch that had cleared the grove, waved her hand again and all the plants that had been there originally had grown back as if they were never touched, soon she walked away leaving only the southeast witch who was currently watching the flowers. She felt a presence in the flowers. After watching the flowers for a while she gave up and turned around, but when she did she heard something from the bushes, so she turned around and saw that beautiful blood red roses had grown on all the plants in the grove, and knew that it was a sign from the magic goddesses that something new and beautiful was coming. The witch smiled and walked away. What she failed to see were all the thorns that were also growing around the roses.

"Nan wake up! We made it!"

"Where?"

"Salem of course!"

Salem. There was something about that word that made Nan uneasy. Before she could think about why it made her feel this way, she was being pulled up to the deck by her very enthusiastic friend to see the view.

"Isn't it just breathtaking?" asked Julia.

"I don't know, Julia, with the war going on against the natives, it might not be that nice." Nan explained to Julia, who looked at Nan as if she was crazy.

"Seriously Nan, you're worried about those dumb savages, we have guns and they have sticks; if anything you should worry about the witches," said Julia putting her hands in Nans face as if about to tell a spooky kids story.

"Witches?"

"Yea, rumors say there are real witches in Salem, but I think it's all just a hoax," Julia boldly stated.

"Oh no, the witches are real, they sell their soul to satan and do his biddings like spreading death and plagues, witches are very dangerous and manipulative, so be careful." said one of two sailors from behind the two teenagers.

"Yea I'm glad I'm not staying in Salem," said the other sailor on his left. Once he said this both sailors left the girls and went back to work. Nan looked at the sailors and then back at the land in the distance that she would soon call home.

Julia then attempted to reassure Nan, even though she didn't sound all to sure herself, by saying, "Don't worry it's just a, uh-"

"Rumor?" asked Nan.

"Yes! Exactly!" said Julia, flashing a smile, that was clearly fake, at a reluctant Nan.

"Come, Julia, we have to to go get ready," said Nan.

"Oh come on Nan, let's have fun and explore the ship," complained Julia.

"We'll get in trouble."

"Only if we get caught."

"You can explore whatever you want when we get to Salem."

"Ugh fine.....promise?" asked Julia.

"You're so childish"

"Just promise," Julia's hazel eyes were looking into Nans emerald ones.

"Ok, I promise," Nan said while rolling her eyes at the brunette that was cheering in front of her. Once Nan turned around, her emerald eyes locked with eyes as black as coal. Noticing this, Julia used her hand to comb Nans long blond locks and pushed her towards the boy.

"Julia what are you doing?!"

"Go talk to him," said Julia making sure the boy couldn't hear.

"Hi there," said the boy in a low British voice. Nan just looked up at his handsome face and blushed.

"Nan, don't be rude, say hi," instructed Julia.

"Hi," said Nan shyly.

The boy just chuckled and continued to talk, "My name is John Newbury, might I ask what yours is?"

"Foster, Nan Foster."

"What a lovely name," stated John.

"I'm sorry but I have to pack for our arrival," said Nan as she was walking away blushing.

Before she could make a getaway, a smiling Julia stopped her and said, "Don't worry, I can do it for you." Nan looked at her, pleading with her jeweled eyes, but the wall that was Julia would not move.

"That's quite alright, as a matter of fact, I must also pack for the new world, good day ladies," said John as he softly grabbed Nans' hand and kissed it gently. After that he walked off, nodding at all the sailors he passed by. When he walked off the two girls giggled at each other while locking arms and made their way down under to pack for their new life in the new world.
