Engagement

"Sam.... " I heard my mom's call suddenly from the door. My mom called me after what seems like two months. Even after everything settled in the house, things weren't settled between us.
I turned to her taking my eyes off my laptop screen. Her face had never been so pale ever since, I have seen her, like it was from these two months. Her eyes were puffy and full of tears and regret all the while. Even though I tried speaking to her, she didn't reciprocate ever. And this was the first time she called me in these two months. Something in me danced with joy as soon as I saw her, but again something else pricked me showing me that I was the reason for her tears. I wished to get up and pull her into a warm hug, but I brushed the thought off, seeing her covering the distance between us. I got up from the bed.
"mom!! " was all I could say. I felt that prick in my throat threatening a sob.
"I'm sorry..... " she said and I couldn't ask for more. I threw my arms around her pulling her into a bear hug.
"it's okay.... " I said after a sob.
We just sat for a while without speaking. Life takes such turns sometimes that we feel awkward even with parents. I wanted to speak a lot about nothing. I wanted to rant off, but again about nothing. 
"are you really fine with Neil? " she asked with that motherly concern to which I couldn't help but smile at her.
"I'm, mom. Don't worry. Neil is every bit of whom a girl could ask for. He's the best. I may take sometime. But this may definitely work. "
"may? " she questioned me.
I was unsure yet sure about my life being perfect with him. Me being good for him. I just didn't answer her.
"is it okay if we finish your engagement in the party tomorrow? " she asked to which my head snapped at her. Is she crazy? 
"mom!! " I started to protest, but soon melted to her puppying eyes.
"you're crazy !!" I decided she was.
She laughed her musical laugh.
"hmm....  Yes.... "pumped her fists. My mom was no less to kids at times.
She was gone, running, before even I could start something.
I shook my head in disbelief. Was I even ready for the engagement? But drooling over what's already gone was unlike me.

"are you sure Sam? " arjun asked for what seemed like a millionth time.
"I'm.... Before I kick your ass get the hell out of here.... " I warned.
I did understand his concern. But I couldn't help yelling at him.
"no, I was just...  "
"making sure.... " I completed for him and he nodded.
"arjun I'm far from sure. I guess I'm ready and I'll be able to handle it. Neil's excited, Ana's excited, the whole family is excited. I can't just ruin the moment. .."
"that doesn't mean you should sacrifice" a voice interjected.
Neil stood at the door with his hands in his pockets. He'd visited many a times since we met.
"Neil... " I started but he cut me short.
"Sam, I can speak to mom and ask her to say some reason and postpone it until you're comfortable. In fact, I'll speak to her now... " he said as he fastened reaching for his phone.
"people, stop it.... I'm completely fine with what's going on. This should happen any other day, then why not now? "
They shared glances and Neil tried speaking which I immediately cut in.
"Neil don't you want to marry me? " I asked looking straight into his eyes.
"of course I do. But Sam, marriage is something that both of us need to be comfortable with. Maybe a few days more and things may get less awkward between us. Then we can think on this"
"what in the hell makes you think that I'm not comfortable?" this was the peak. I yelled regretting the next second.
"Neil, I am comfortable around you. Eventually, things get better. So is with us. We won't speak about this again until you have some problems regarding this? "
"no , I don't. "
"and that's the end of the matter. You got me? " I glanced both of them and they nodded.
"fine.... "

Neil's POV

She entered the party hall with Ana and radhika, blushing at something Ana said. Dressed in a beautiful pink Sari, she was no less than an angel. Her Sari stuck to her perfectly curved body. She had her long hair tied in a fish plait, her hands full of pink bangles. A small elegant necklace over her neck and matching earrings.
She came and stood next to me.
"beautiful... " I said making her blush in shades. Her blush matched her face perfectly.
I couldn't help the smile that took over my lips as I stood there watching her.
"Neil... " she nudged me bringing me back to senses.
"so, here we go... Put it on her finger...." said my dad offering me a red velvet box.
I opened it to find a beautiful ring that would perfectly fit on Sam's beautiful little ring finger.
I took her ever so soft hand in my harsh ones. The touch electrified me. I stood there looking into her eyes, which was deeply boring into mine.
"Neil.... " ana nudged me this time. We smiled, embarrassed.
I put the ring on her finger with the tingling sensation all over my palm.
She wore me a ring which was as same as the one I made her wear. As soon as she finished I caught her hand in mine, not wanting to let go.
"why don't we dance? " radhika chimmed.
"sure.... " I said and saw Sam for any protest. She smiled at me signaling that she was fine. The music was turned on and I dragged her to the dance floor.

I held her in front of me, taking her left hand in mine and placing her right hand softly over my shoulder.

My eyes met her brown ones. We swayed to the rhythm. The song almost matched the situation. Her scent taking my senses away. That tingling sensation in my hand on her waist. Her eyes in mine.. Everything felt so different, so dreamy, yet true.

I slowly took her hands to my lips, kissing them gently on her fingers. She straightened for a second, but I moved her to the rhythm. The feeling of her soft fingers over my lips sent shivers down my spine. Her beautiful face was in a deep shade of red due to her immense blushing.

I smiled all the way I danced with her. I just realized she's perfect. She's perfect for this imperfect life of mine. I so liked her. Everything about her. I was so in love with her...
Did I just mention I love her? God! Do I really love her? This should be cleared now. I decided.
" I'll be back in a minute. " I said and and walked out if the dance floor leaving behind a confused Sam.

"what's your problem? " Ana yelled as I dragged her to a side keeping her ice-cream cone on the table.
"do I love her? " I asked seriously.
"whom? " she asked still licking her fingers.
"sam" I said after pulling her.
"how would I know? "
"I just thought it now. "
"then maybe... " she said nonchalantly.
"Ana... " I warned her.
"okay.... people say when you close your eyes, you'll see the one you love... Try, it may work. " she said with a wink and walked away.
Did I have any other option? I closed my eyes and her face was in front of me in a blink. That confirmed. I loved her. But, this soon? Of course, She had become my best friend for two months. Even then.
"what's wrong? " arjun who had seen me acting mad came over.
"I love her. "I said, still lost.
"then tell her. " he said and I shook my head immediately.
"she'll kill me. "
"how would you know without telling her? "
That was true.
"shall I ask her? "
"you should. "
"okay! " I took a deep breath and walked to her. She was standing there speaking with Ana, radhika and my mom.
"Sam, I love you.... " I said as soon as I reached her. My eyes were squeezed shut when I confessed, preparing myself for the up coming slap.
As my cheeks didn't burn, I slowly opened my eyes to see her eyes welling up. I regretted my confession. I should have waited for few more days.
"I'm sor...." she was soon gone before I completed.
