The Cohesion Of Black Holes

Vikram joined the Jumpers 7 years ago, he was so excited to join the elite group of travellers back then. With hindsight, he knows now how wrong he was. He had experienced too many things too fast, saw things that are better left unseen, done things that not even gods could dream of and had been at the verge of death more times then should be possible.

The Jumpers were formed 70 years ago when a group of physicists and engineers for the first time proved the possibility of space-time jumping (aka time travel) through the creation and stabilisation of miniature black holes. These weren’t just ordinary nerds in your backyard but a constitution of greatest minds of that time. This remains the most iconic and devastating event in the history of mankind, for what followed was chaos, pure and untainted. In the span of next ten years they built the biggest ever energy concentrator that made LHC (large hadron collider) look like a child’s play. It spanned the entire length of the Indian peninsula and consumed more power than what the entirety of Africa consumed over a year in just a day. And it did exactly what it was meant to do, make black holes, and did it rather too well. The very first run, created a black hole which was large enough to be stable and small enough too isolate, the unlikely success of this run encouraged a series of failed, successful and even unclassifiable runs.

Though things seemed positive, the world was in for a nasty surprise: the 108th run. The frequency of runs kept on increasing up till this point. The space-time fabric was being stretched and relaxed at an intense pace due to this continuous creation and evaporation(collapse) of blachos (slang short form for black holes). This run was the critical point; it gave rise to one too many blacho simultaneously, the previous tension in space-time combined with the tension rise due to a blacho in the vicinity made way for another blacho. And a chain reaction that was sparked then still propagates to date. That initial pair of blachos parented micro fractures in the space-time continuum, which developed into even more blachos and so on. However like any newly born, the blachos need enough energy to sustain them at birth. They appeared everywhere, and consumed everything like locusts. And our civilization fell. It fell, fell to the bottom of a well so deep that the sun seemed like a star, and the moon like a dream.

Our population dropped from 8 billion to 80 thousand, our infrastructure and technology was ripped to shreds. The 20 years which followed the 108th were living hell for those who survived and well death for those who were lucky enough to fall prey to the game of chance played by the universe with your life at stake. People and sometimes entire buildings would just disappear overnight, consumed by a blacho, mortality rate fell down to as low as less than 1 year. Entire nations just developed tumours in an instant and then get consumed by that ‘tumour’ in the next minute. Some would be consumed only in parts, leaving behind gross innards, while others would vanish without a trace.  Survivors started noticing coincidences and patterns in the random appearances of the blachos. It was only a matter of time (another decade) before the survivors managed to scavenge data regarding blachos, published by the initial Jumpers. Once the data was completely analysed and understood (another decade), the survivors revived the Jumper group but now with a different agenda to improve the quality of life and reduce the effect of blachos on human life. 
They came up with a clever yet simple solution. They made warders: they essentially work like the thunder rods on top of big towers, they attract the singularities reducing the chances of blacho forming in the neighbourhood. Then came the experimenters who started intentionally sending in objects into the blachos and tracking them in the flow of time to understand the effects of blachoing (entering in a blacho).Through their hard work and dedication they were able to refine blachos to act as wormholes (at least 60%of the time). As the accuracy and precision of worm-holing increased, humanoids were sent in to test for the safety for human travellers.

Vikram joined the jumpers as one such traveller (of course only after it was declared 50% safe), Vikram and his team's main objective was to retrieve data regarding the 108th. However they had another one much more complex and essential task: to rewrite history, so that the 108th wouldn't have occurred in the first place. However they were doomed to fail from the very beginning. Anything they did to alter history would always lead back to the occurrence of the 108th .

They needed to go further back in time to increase the possibility of 'escaping' the 108th but they couldn't go that back in time without destabilising the space time continuum around the earth meaning that the entire universe enter the big crunch (wherein the Higgs field collapses into a stabler state and essentially rewrites the laws of the universe).

Vikram having realised that this impending doom cannot be escaped from with just brute force and technology tries to ban all modes of time travel (worm-holing) but is not well received, for worm-holing had become in an integral part of human culture and it is never easy for a lone man to convince an entire race otherwise overnight. The problem with worm-holing is that it slowly but definitely destabilizes the space-time continuum and especially in its then condition it would have been extremely risky to even make a single jump. Moreover, the chain reaction itself continues to destabilise and rupture the continuum. Vikram could see that even if he were to convince everyone to stop time travelling he wouldn't be able to guarantee everyone's safety. So he had only one option left; stabilise and normalise space-time back to its original state before the 108th.

How to do that? Inspiration stuck him in the form of water droplets, he noticed that he could accurately evaporate a single large water drop completely compared to evaporating the same amount of water dispersed as many droplets. So, he theorised that if the entire earth (that is the entire affected portion of space-time) was to entire a singularity, then all the minute ruptures and all blachos would collasce into this singularity. When and if earth were to emerge through this singularity then it would be free of all abnormalities.

He fires up the largest warder possible to build the singularity required to the job, however a mere miscalculation in the order of a billionth could mean that the world ends for good. He projects the singularity into an orbit around earth, where it pick ups speed and mass. It rapidly spirals towards the centre of earth ravaging everything in its path, chaos reigns and POOF! The Earth disappeared.
