I raised my hands to Heath's neck, my fingers quivering like a homie due his fix, as I moved to check his pulse.
I sighed in relief, my body relaxing a bit from the tension when I felt the normal steady beat of his blood pulsing through his jugular vein.
I raised my hand to wipe the glistening sweat off of my forehead and the energy that took was too much. So much that I wanted to close my eyes and go into hibernation.
"Alora, what's wrong?" Arsen's voice was sharp with distress.
I distinctly remember his green eyes flashing at me through the rearview mirror as the blood pumped in my ears, my brain blanking from a sudden exhaustion that I had no clue where it came from.
"ALORA!" Arsen's voice boomed through the small space in the car, and my body lurched forward, startled.
I blinked, my eyes half-hooded and head heavy like someone had stuffed wet wool in there somewhere.
"What?" I snapped back, my voice coming out rough like a dead cat as I craned my neck to look outside the dark road, illuminated by street's white lights.
The three identical black jeeps were still behind us, all three of them gaining up on us in one, defensive line, preventing us from turning back around and hitchhiking this road.
There was only one way to go now for us and that was forward.
"Alora, can you hear me?" Arsen's eyes were focused entirely on the cars but his question was voiced at me.
"Yes. I'm not deaf, you know." I turned around to glare at him through the rearview mirror even though he wasn't looking.
For a split second his eyes connected with mine in the mirror and they flashed with an emotion that looked very much like relief but I must be imagining it 'cause we don't give a shit about each other.
"Will he survive?" Arsen asked, his eyes flickering to Heath's body beside me.
With difficulty I moved my head to look at Heath's face, now even more pale and his body shaking even more violently than before and I nodded silently, my heart breaking seeing one of the strongest men I had met in such pain.
I moved my hand towards his, struggling to open his clenched fist as gently as I could without hurting him. After a few moments of effort, I succeeded but he hissed in pain when my cold hand made contact with the raw skin of his palm where his nails had dug so deeply, that blood was a seconds away from oozing out.
Nonetheless, I held his hand gently, giving it a little squeeze, expecting to give him some peace in his discomfort.
"For now, yes. But I dunno how long before his pulse starts dropping."
Arsen nodded.
"Alora, Heath's out and I'm driving. That leaves you for shooting. Can you drop your 'I'm too innocent to kill people' act, now? We need to get Heath to a medical expert ASAP."
Arsen's eyes met mine in the rearview mirror again and then turned back to the front, and I glared at his big head.
"I'll take that as a yes. Here."
Arsen removed his hand from the gear stick, his other hand still on the steering wheel driving smoothly.
Extending his free hand backwards, his palm outstretched, presenting me with a black Springfield XDm 4.5.
It was one of the most beautiful and perilous gun out there that had ever been created and it did not belong to our agency.
It was from a place I didn't have time to think on. So, clenching my jaw and snapping it shut, I silently snatched the gun from his hand, feeling its heavy weight in my hand.
Arsen's arm didn't go back to the front. It caught my wrist holding his gun in a light grip, his eyes reconnecting with mine in the rearview mirror when I looked up.
A smirk lifted his lips upwards, his eyes flashing with something too fast for me to catch as the words left his mouth coated with cockiness.
"Light up the night, babe."
