Lance was used to putting others before himself. He came from a large family and looking after three younger siblings whilst helping out his mother gave him a lot of experience in stressful situations. There were times were Lance's father would be on a business trip and his mother was at work late which left Lance to look after his siblings. When he was younger his older siblings used to help out, but before he could say 'quick' one of them was married and had a child and the other was in college so Lance learned to look after his younger siblings and put them before himself.
His mother worked as an accounts assistant at a local garage, which meant she earnt 20-30 dollars an hour and she worked over 10 hours a day on the weekday. Which would add up to 875-1225 dollars a week, if Lance counted correctly? It seemed like a lot, but after adding up taxes, bills, food, and other weekly needs they ended up scraping the bottom of the bucket. She often worked late, offering to close up and put in that extra hour to earn even a cent. Lance found his mother amazing, thinking she deserved to sit on a throne with the world bowing at her feet. She was able to come home after 7 plus hours of work and smile at her children and give them the attention they needed.
His father, on the other hand, didn't give them much attention at all. He worked at some law firm and Lance wasn't quite sure what he did. He often had to leave for business trips which would go on week to week intervals. The weeks he was away they never heard a peep and when he was home they only ever saw him at the dinner table. Lance was often kept awake at night, listening to his parents bicker. His bed usually piled up with his siblings before midnight, all of them crying because his father's shouting scared them.
The house they lived in was small, well, small compared to the six, used to be eight, people living in it. His older brother, James, moved out, leaving Lance with his own room for the first time in his life, after sharing his with his younger brother Luke. His older sister, Kira, moved to New York to study some artsy program at some famous institute in the big apple. Once she moved out the twins got their own room too. Mia and Mike were only 4, so his mother made them share a room. It was a tight fit having two people in the small rooms of the house. His parent's room only had enough room for the double bed and a drawer cabinet for clothes.
Lance was always put on pick up duty, having to pick his siblings up from school seeing as he was the only one who could. His mother bought him an old, red, beat up pick up truck, you know the kind with back seats? He called it Daisy. He loved the homely vibe of it, seeing as it fit his family home perfectly, messy but full of character. He was always rushing out of his final period, jumping into the driver's seat and off to his sibling's primary school. He would then bring them home, get them to do homework while starting on dinner. Then have them washed up and at the table by the time his mother was home.
But that changed when his father left on April 16th. Lance remembered picking up his siblings from school and driving home. His mom wasn't supposed to be home until after 7, yet she sat at the dinner table, a bottle of wine next to a glass in front of her. Lance sent her siblings to the tv room to watch something and was at her side in a matter of seconds.
He's gone Lance, she had said, her voice breaking and tears streaming down her face. He's gone and he's not coming back.
He had tried denying it, telling her it was fine and he was going to be back in a couple of days. But he was gone. He had taken his belongings and left, a filled out divorce paper on the table. Lance was beyond angry. How could he leave like that? Break a mother's heart and leave his children? He had gone into overdrive and ushered her to take a long bath while he made dinner and organized his siblings.
Eventually, he became so focused on his family he eventually forgot about himself, only to be thrown back into reality when his acceptance letter from the Garrison arrived in the mail. He then found himself in a dorm room with his best friend Hunk, having made it into the Garrison. It was different from his home.
