Performing

We entered the outer sanctuary

to the guards challenge, "can I see your ID please?"

I stared, not comprehending the words nor my sons answer.

“I don't have any.” Fear amidst expectation.

"He’s with us," says my wife, the guard nods.

For how many centuries have

the holy of holies been protected and the

chosen given entrance with privilege and grace without

the need to prove they are worthy to be present.

Their very bearing was sufficient.

Just speak up for yourself; say, “I’m with them.”

There’ll be no more awkward moments, to spoil our night.

We explore the festival village, seeking food, and rest.

Observing and discussing all the sights and sounds.

We eat, then join, the eclectic queue!

Have people always waited, politely

in lines. Awaiting entrance to the spectacle

that has brought them from their daily lives to be uplifted.

To have their lives changed for ever, to fall in love

to sing, dance or be touched; that first time.

The Spiegel Tent awaits us, its glory

plain to see. Painted images of former days,

of performance grand and thrills and chills; and hearts left fulfilled.

The wood and glass and mirrors, lights and smells and sounds;

all combine in prepared alchemy.

.

A light flicks on, the stage smokes blue, a sound

from the back. Behind the crowd, she strums, then that voice.

Soft at first, husky, feminine, then stronger than one thought.

She sings the words and we join in the sharing and

the show. We are her and she is we.

The repertoire we know and join in where

the words are ours and hers and our voices unite.

Her version of another's song that brings our history

into conscious mind and the naked bodies truth.

Part of our past to be respected.

Amanda does not shy away from the

honest truth. She wears it as a badge of honour.

Singing out for respect and self awareness of living,

of caring, of being healthy, and at your best!

Respectful love of the living now.

You reading this; yes, you can change the world!

Her words tell us to take up string and sing out loud;

to love and care and be proud, of life and being diff’rent.

Don't kill ourselves and dwell on pain; but live, breathe and

exercise, and celebrate our lives.

So take up your ukulele and sing

out loud. About hairy underarms and Maps of

Tasmania and not giving a fuck to feed war and

violence; but touching life with our voices, and

our hands, and arms, and our honesty.
