I was seated on the old bus that reeked of deodorant. People were throwing empty cans of aerosol around the bus. At one stage, a can clunked me on the head. I smiled at the worried kid, who began stumbling his apology, and told him it was okay.
I'll never forget the relief of his face and how his lips made an 'o' shape. I chuckled and turned my attention to the snowy scenery outside.
Toronto. That was where I was. Quite different from California. My head swirled back to the times my drunken mother threw a bottle of wine at me, narrowly missing my cheek. I shuddered at the memory of her actually hitting me with a broken wine glass. I still have that scar on my arm.
That was the night I rung the cops, and my aunt. When the police came knocking at our door, I ran out faster than I ever had in my life. They told me to go over to a friend's house, and that I will be assigned a legal guardian in the morning.
Papers were signed, next thing I know my mom was sent to rehab and I was gone off to my aunt, Emily.
"Hey, you know you can get off now?" A small voice whispered in my ear, followed by a soft poke.
Startled by being interrupted by my thoughts, I nodded my head and stood up. She took a step back, allowing me to get out of the mouldy seat.
"I'm Veronica, by the way. And you are....?"
"Jennifer, but you can call me Jen!' I beamed at her.
She beamed back, and I began to make my way off the bus. It softly groaned under my weight.
Maybe losing a few pounds might not be a bad idea.

Veronica gave me a full tour of the school, she showed me were everything was. From the bathrooms to the cafeteria. Everywhere except for a room on the upstairs. It's door was a different shade of blue from the rest of them. It's window was covered with a white bed-sheet.
"What's in there?" I ask, nodding my head in it's direction.
"Don't go in there!" She exclaimed, yanking my arm and pulled me back. "The outcasts hang out there. They will kill us if we enter, or worse," she shuddered. "Befriend us".
I chuckled a bit, but didn't enter the room. It was agony not going in, but I could always check it out later.
"C'mon, you have the same Math class as me. It's room 103, downstairs."
I strolled down the stairs, our foots tapping softly in unison. She waved at a few people, and high-fived someone who called her 'V-Cat'. I suddenly felt like an outcast myself.
Everyone I had seen in this school were the same. They said the same jokes, walked the same, talked the same, some even looked the same.
The bell suddenly bursted out it's cry to get to class. In my old school, the whole hall would be in chaos, literally climbing over people to make it to class on time.
But here, everyone just strolled along humming an overplayed song on the radio. I frantically looked at Veronica but she only smiled.
I didn't really take in how she looked. I studied her face. She had a round shaped face, with thin lips. She had faint creases on her forehead, as if she was constantly trying to understand something. Her dark skin hid her bags quite well, but if you stood close enough you could see them.
Her bright green eyes, danced in the light. She was constantly scanning the room as if she was looking for someone. She nervously flicked her aburn hair over her shoulder.
"Why do you keep staring at me?"
"Hmm?" I snapped back into reality. We were standing outside the class room door. "Sorry, I zoned out," I shrugged sheepishly.
"Okay! " She nudged me. " Go on in, I'll sit beside you".

Throughout the whole day, I met so many people, I won't be able to remember half of their names when I wake up tomorrow.
It was kinda creepy how they all spoke in the same way, how their gestures mirrored each other when they were sharing a story.
One girl got my attention.
She was a small, petite girl. 4 feet tall at the most. Her skin was a brown shade like coffee, and her wild, red curls tumbled past her shoulders. She wore white frames, resting on her button nose, and underneath them were the most stunning emerald eyes I ever seen.
Even though she was short and dainty, she had some curves on her hips. With rings on each of her fingers, she waved a hand at me with a small smile.
Before I could wave back, she turned around, opened the door and slipped inside.
It wasn't until Veronica called me back to reality had I realised...
The door was a different shade of blue than the rest of them....
