I walked down the hall, my eyes catching contact with Andrew, an eleventh grader. He is the guy I have liked since eighth grade, but have known I can't be with him. Not only is he a grade older than me, my friends don't seem to like him. "You don't like THAT Andrew right?" "He's mean in the bus" "he's too old anyway" yada yada ya. Because of this, I try to not let them know it is him I like, or get to close to him. I barely speak to him, actually. Nobody else knows this, but there is another reason I can't be with him.
I walked over to my spot on the waiting bench and sat down. He walked to his locker, and I looked away before he saw me. I glanced back at him when he looked away, and he stretched. I noticed he got a new grey hoodie today, and it was slightly baggy on him, he also got a new haircut. I looked away when I realized I was staring. Sure I feel bad for liking him behind my friends backs, but I can't help it. I stood up as the teacher beckoned us all into the classroom. I had math class right now, but he has science in the class right next to this one. As Mrs. Kaleo droned on about all that factoring distributed algebra I doodled on loose leaf paper. "Katt" I suddenly heard my name called. I quickly looked up at the smart board and saw the problem.
7(3x +9) = ?
"Umm.. 21x + 63?" I said, quickly trying to solve it in my head. The teacher nodded. "Yes," she said, then continued talking to the rest of the class. I waited till the full noise of the bell sounded, and got up from my seat and left the room. As I exited the door, I noticed Andrew walking out of the science room, and he was looking at me. I looked away before I made my way to my locker and put my morning binder away, and grabbed my sketchbook and pencil to go to lunch. I fast walked down the hall, navigating through the crowd of students and made my way to the lunch line. I sat down with my friends, Maggie, Becky, Brook, and Carter. "Heya Kaaaaaatttttt"
Brook drags my name. "Hi." I say quietly. They acknowledge me until I open my sketchbook and silently draw. I think about wolves and stuff while I draw, and let my mind wander. I snap back to reality and quickly cover what I've drawn with my arm. It was a dark wolf sulking alone in an empty locker hallway. Papers litter the floor and the lockers are missing their numbers. The wolf is looking away. It's looking at something that's down another hallway that isn't in view. "Oh what's thaaat?" Carter leans over and tries to see over my arm. "Nothing"
" aw come on Katt!" Carter whines.
"Just a doodle" I say
"Of what?"
"Nunya bidness" I say and pat him on the back before standing up when the bell rings. Time for gym class. I walk down the hall, turning the corners till I get to my locker. I put my sketchbook away and close the locker. I hang back at my locker for a second longer, and see Andrew down at his locker. His locker is only nine away, so his locker isn't that far away. I go to the gym and to the locker room. I change and come out in my basketball shorts and a baggy t-shirt. I grabbed the last basketball off the rack and walked to the hoop I usually shoot at. I shot the ball but it hit the top of the rim and fell. I caught the ball as it bounced off the floor. I adjusted my aim and shot for it again. The ball hesitated for a moment but then went through the hoop. Yes!
"Nice shot."
I immediately recognized the voice and felt my skin all wash over in goosebumps and I got the chills. I spun around to see Andrew, and almost had to scream at my brain to function. "Thanks" I said.
"You play?"
"Nah."
Usually I only play knockout or just shoot on my own.
"Hm."
I tossed him the ball. "You give it a try"
"Okay.." he said, catching the ball. He aimed the ball, angling his wrist and throwing the ball. I watched as it came oh-so-close but hit against the back rim and fell to the floor. I held back a smile as he made a "darn" gesture and gave me the ball back. He smiled as I tossed the ball for the hoop, and made the basket, swaying the net. He nodded, impressed. I feel bad, I'm not exactly always the best with starting conversations, but I was saved from having to when the attendance whistle was blown.
I ran over and sat in the gym floor with the other Mr. Shen students. The teachers announced that after a short warmup we would get the choice to play doctor dodgeball or go to the weight room upstairs. After the running warmup I chose to stay downstairs and play dr. Dodgeball, and Maggie said she'd stay too. We started playing, our side chose Matt as the doctor. Mrs. Awenn dumped the dodgeballs on the floor in the middle, and the game started. I sprinted up to them, grabbed one as I was running, and spun around. I looked around and spotted James on the other team. James was one of those people who shows no mercy, so he'd be a pretty good target. Allison, on the other hand, was more evasive and better at dodging around, and supplied everyone with a ball if they didn't have one. I decided to go for Allison and waited for an opening in the group of people on the other team. I threw the ball and nailed her in the arm. I threw the ball more gentle than others do, but I could still tell it hurt a bit. I ducked as a ball chucked over my head and made a loud bang off the wall, showing that it really would have hurt if I got hit. I watched as Emma on the other side went to tag Allison back in. "Emma's their doctor!" I shouted, and jumped and rolled when a ball nearly amputated my foot. Maggie on my team got Emma out, and immediately you could tell their numbers were decreasing. The glory seemed to stop when Andrew from the other team got Matt, our doctor out. Then both teams numbers were decreasing. People on both sides dropped like flies. First Craig in the other side, then Owen, then Nate in our side, more and more. I dodged and weaved around, getting people out as I threw and caught dodgeballs. I felt bad as Andrew caught eye contact with me but I had to get him out. I threw the ball and nailed him in the gut. Ouch! I winced as he sat down in his spot. I grabbed another ball and threw it harder at James and you could hear the bang as it hit him on his leg. The whistle was blown as Xander on our team got the last person out. Yea! I thought. The teachers told us all to go change back, and when I was done I re-entered the gym. The bell rang and everyone left the gym. I walked for the door, but was stopped as someone's hand was placed on my shoulder. Chills spread through me starting at the spot where the hand touched my arm.
"Katt"
Okay, so the other secret hasn't yet been revealed in this chapter, but it is in the next one. :)
