I looked at my ceiling thinking about the whole deal thing. I had heard about it so many times but never questioned it like this. My dad had told me about their tests and all the can say is the test and the reasons for taking them.
A book hit my chest and I pounced up realizing once again that Claire was still here. Claire was my best friend we've hung out since we were six.
"Why are you so serious Reece?" Claire groans as she jumps onto my bed. I look at her surprised and I sit up.
"Its just a lot to think about the deal." I sigh putting a hand through my hair. "Not really, I'm kinda excited to know my future!" Claire giggles rubbing her hands together. She had a huge grin on her face and her eyes looked as wild as ever.
Claire's green eyes shinned and her blonde hair shined under the moonlight. Tomorrow we'd have to wake up early for the first test. But now I was just thinking about how different Claire and I were. I was scared that she wouldn't be a part of my life anymore. The first test was about where you were grouped into the school I was having a gut feeling that Claire would never be anywhere near my group.
Claire was a fun wild person and I was way to serious I mean I could be funny. Claire was a weird geeky person she wasn't exactly in the popular category. Claire looked like one of those preppy girls in those story books they'd call them cheerleaders.
I on the other hand had dark brown hair with diamond blue eyes and Claire had told me once I looked the same. If we were all based on looks I would fit in with Claire supposably. I wish everyone was based on looks...
My father had explained the first test to me, it was first about what you liked to do and sorts, then it was about bigger things like where your grades and friend category is. He couldn't share that much information though, no one could.
People heated rumors about what would happen to you if you ever crossed the rules. If you broke "the deal."
My father told me when I was younger that everyone used to be in control of their own lives that people could choose their own fate but eventually something Supposably happened. My father said he's not sure what happened everyone is blank on that part of the story. Some say that new people came from a sacred land and taught them what we now do today but it's what ever we believe.
"You there or are you still in dream land?" Claire questions.
"I'm in dream land like always." I sigh getting up and going to my closet. Claire got up following me and she grabbed something from her backpack.
"I'm wearing this to the first test." Claire's voice rang from behind me, I turned around to see a shining dress. It was all glittery and was light blue everywhere.
"It fits in all the right places!" Claire chirps excitedly and I laugh at her.
"Im wearing this." I say grabbing a short red dress behind me and she looked at me. "Your mother left that for you right when you know." Claire gawked at it and crossed her arms
"The word your referring to is dead." I state and she looks at me embarrassed. Claire's cheeks had went solid red and the room filled up with awkward tension. I could feel Claire absorbing it.
"I mean she's dead not you know.." I said searching around the room.
"well I think it is time for me to leave but tomorrow I'll see you then." Claire says hugging me tightly it almost felt like the end.
After Claire left I decided to try on the dress to see if it fit right. I started putting it on until something slipped out of it.
I picked it up thinking maybe my father had accidentally delivered it with some mail in his hand.
The letter had my name on it though REECE
I opened it gently and read.
Dear Reece,
My baby girl I'm sorry I'm not with you today I just couldn't live in this world. If you haven't heard yet I did commit sucide but don't think it was because of you my baby girl. I just couldn't take this life. The way it is! Baby girl I need you to know that this "deal" is holding us back from are full potential. If your not on my side it's okay but if your thinking about what goes wrong and all that then I feel that your with me. Your aunt Patty was so calm when the deal came around and I remember stressing to the very last test. I want you to know, Reece whatever you choose for your fate is you. I want you to know that you can choose your life though. I'm so proud of you
- love mom
I blink a few times realizing that this letter could of got my mother killed right off the bat and my father for association. This letter had death written all over it. My mother had written me a letter for what she believed in but she could never go through with it made no since.
A knock came from my door and my dad came in. I hid the letter in my dresser and he smiled gently. "It's time to go to bed sweetie big day tomorrow." He closed the door.
Big day all right.
