Chapter 4 - Sing Me To Sleep, I'll See You In My Dreams

Start from the beginning

"Have you-"

"I asked her if she's fine. She tells me that she is," he reassured her.

Catherine let out a sigh of relief. She couldn't forget that incident four years ago when it was the first anniversary of Stephen's death. She locked herself in her room and kept on crying and screaming while Catherine was just outside.

Then everything was silent. That was when Catherine got worried.

She came in and entered (Y/N)'s room. She saw that (Y/N) was staring out into space and that there was a razor, glinting in the moonlight, on the other side of the room.

Catherine couldn't help herself that night and tackled (Y/N). She looked around for signs of any cuts. The sight of the razor just broke her heart.

"No. No. Kit Kat!" (Y/N) tried to say as Catherine searched her with tears blurring her eyesight. "Kat! Catherine!" (Y/N) held her best friend square on the shoulders. "I didn't do it," she told her. "I...couldn't."

"You promise me you don't have any cuts?" Catherine sobbed.

"I promise. I didn't want to do it. I don't think Stephen would approve."

"You're right he won't approve!"

Catherine cursed as she wiped away the tears on her face. Then she pulled (Y/N) in for a hug.

Even if (Y/N) told Catherine that she couldn't do it, Catherine still had the fear that she'll see (Y/N) drowning her own pool of blood one day. She knew that her best friend wasn't stable. She did her best to be there for her and to keep watch.

Catherine made it to the door of Stephen's room. It was closed but she doubted if it was locked. She could've tried to see if it wasn't locked by trying to open the door but she didn't want to intrude. She was about to knock on the door when she heard a gentle strumming of the guitar on the other side. Along the guitar, there was a soft voice.

Just close you're eyes

The sun is going down

You'll be alright

No one can hurt you now

Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound.

Catherine smiled. She knew that it was (Y/N)'s favorite song. For Catherine, the song was both sad and reassuring. It was sad because she knew that (Y/N) was singing it to herself to feel better. But she was glad that somehow, (Y/N) believed that she'll be safe and that she won't be hurt.

When you're in a dark place, the best way of recovery is to believe that you can go back into the light and leave the dark.

"(Y/N)?"

When (Y/N) was finished playing, she heard someone calling her and knocking on the door. She knew who's voice that was. She immediately jumped off the bed and opened the door to see Catherine.

"Hey!" (Y/N) hugged her best friend with one arm since she was still holding the guitar. "What are you doing here?"

Seeing the sparkle in (Y/N)'s eye, Catherine saw that (Y/N) must've been well. It filled her with relief.

"Checking up on you, what do you think?" Catherine said.

"You don't have to. I'm perfectly fine. But thank you."

"Looks like it," she laughed.

A boy with dirty blonde hair came into view. (Y/N)'s eyes widened when she saw Thomas and she almost dropped the guitar at the process. (Y/N) gave Catherine a look which says, You brought him here!? But she didn't think she could understand.

"That's one nice guitar," he told her.

"Thanks, it's my brother's."

"Right," Thomas seemed off guard with the response. "I'm sorry about what happened to him."

"Oh. Um thank you," (Y/N) replied. "I'll just put this back."

(Y/N) was so enchanted by Thomas she didn't see the looks that the two cousins gave each other.

Catherine smacked Thomas's arm. "Why would you say that?" She hissed.

"Why wouldn't I?" Thomas felt confused.

"Well she'd know that I told you about it. It's private stuff!"

"Then why'd you tell me?" He retorted.

Catherine was saved from an embarrassing comeback by (Y/N) who came out of Stephen's room, oblivious of the banter the cousins just had.
