Darkness is always so peaceful, it brings quiet and calm to the forest. Turning into the wind, letting it flow through my soft brown coat. Following the warn path ahead of me, I ran along the northern border of my pack. Panting I slowed to a trot, crossing a small stream I lowered my head to drink. Lapping up the cool crisp water, letting my senses take over I listened to the forest around me.

Behind me, footfalls sounded in the dense underbrush, slowly lowered myself to the ground as her steps pounded directly behind me. Glancing up I watched as a brown wolf flew over me and directly into the waiting creek. Rising from my crouch I watched my friend splutter, water coating her fur, now running off in droplets. Growling she clambered out of the icy water, landing next to me with a less than an elegant flop. Laughing internally I watched as Sahara rolled towards me.

Snapping her teeth at me in annoyance I gave her a wolfy grin, licking the side of her face. "How did you hear me? I thought for sure you wouldn't be able to with all the noise of the creek." Sahara spoke into my mind through our pack link. "You should know by now you can't sneak up on me."

Rolling over Sahara jumped up to stand next to me, making sure to shake out her still damp fur, spraying water all over me. Turning to her I nipped at her heels, quickly she darted away from me, dashing back down the path. Together we raced through the forest, weaving between the mossy rocks, and trees.

After a while, we began to slow down as we reached the northern border of Light pack territory. Ahead was the final turn in the path that lead back to the packhouse. Across from it stood a sprawling field that separated us from neutral territory. Far beyond the field ahead laid the Dark pack. Land of rotting souls and darkness. At that thought a prickle ran through my wolf, making my hair stand on end.

He laid not far beyond that border, the cruelest of them all. The dark wolf king himself. I had only had the displeasure of meeting that beast once. It was a day I will never forget. Ian, Sahara, and I had been playing behind the packhouse when we heard the first screams. They still haunted my nightmares, at the sound of my parents the betas of our pack had come running along with the alphas. But they were far too late.

The woods around the packhouse had all but been stained with the blood of our packmates. Two groups of dark pack wolves had entered our lands, along with their king. In a matter of minutes, they had overtaken us. By the time any of us at the packhouse had received word, the second group had surrounded the packhouse. There was no way any of us could go to help the patrol groups, none of those wolves returned.

Ian's parents the alphas had shifted along with mine as soon as they stepped outside. I remember the terror that had swept through my veins as Ian pressed Saharah and me behind him. Moving us slowly back to the shelter of the packhouse. How weak I was then, barely even though my first shift at fourteen when they attacked. What a coward I had been hiding behind Ian when I could have been fighting alongside our parents. Maybe I could have saved them. But I didn't. All I did was freeze and hide like a pathetic little wolf.

"Everyone get inside, we will handle this." The booming command came from our Alpha through the pack link. Ian moved us closer to the house as his father a large grey wolf prowled down the stairs, snarling into the shadows of the forest. Turning I looked into the trees, and that's when I caught the first sight of him. Through the darkness, an almost neon blue pair of eyes stared back. They glowed with what seemed to be blue fire. Never had I seen any wolf's eyes that color, let alone glowing so menacingly. Recalling the tremors that racked through my body at that stare I shuddered. The King had seemed to stare right into my eyes. It was crazy to think that though, why would he be looking at me?
