a/n: inspired by amelia earhart, possibly the world's greatest female pilot of all time. she was the first woman to make a transatlantic flight, and she set many other speed and distance records, blazing history in aviation. in 1937, she was almost done with her flight around the world--the first flight around the world, ever--when she disappeared over the pacific ocean. to this day, no remains or evidence have been found regarding her and her plane's disappearance.

She wants to live in blue.

1937.

The sky gapes overhead
Waiting patiently
For the send off to end
Soon--and here, now--
The girl (for she is only a girl..
There are no such thing as grownups)
Boards the metal bird.

Check, check, check.

A growl of smoke trails out
Then whirs to life from its beak
As it gazes up into rippling blue--
And she's off!--
The eyes follow the bird's path
Up, up, always up
And the sky smirks
For the silver blur is enveloped azure.

The sky studies the girl
Her freckles shift restlessly
On her face like the islands below
Her eyes bright and wide
Leaking undulating excitement
Drowning themselves in life--
So much life--
Nature drenches her lungs.

The sky recognizes her
A wild angel trapped in humanity
A pang of pity brushes the sky
And it darkens
Swathed in swatches of gray
Violet, avarice, cream
Topaz, steel, emerald steam
And the days fly by
On their pale-tipped wings
And below the blue
The other blue prepares
Quietly
To sing.

The sea, the sea
Rival only to the sky
And that is all that matters.

The sea broils eagerly
Lets the envy churn in his belly
As he races beneath the silver streak
Dulled in the sky's protective clouds
Yet he can still sense the life up there
Feel the girl's crystal breaths
Hear the pulse of her joy
Taste her fiery hair and
He supposes it is a joy
To be free.

But he wouldn't know.

×

The sky feels the stinging spray
Plummeting up, up to meet her
She shivers, summoning more
More cloud cover
For she must carry this
This handful of life around the world.

×

The sea lets loose torrents of fury
Heavy and roaring charcoal fountains
Reaching for the sky
Clawing at her clouds and
Dragging them down with his misery,
Leaving smears of rain in their wake.

Poison swallows rain and
He lets them slide down
Into his waiting army,
Relishing the drops of sky blood.

×

The sky shrieks flickering thunder
Lost in feathered static.

She chokes on thorny lightning
And spits it venomously violently
Down.

×

They meet, blue rising and dropping
Collapsing upon each other
And the horizon line shrinks in fear
Gazing with its unblinking eye
At the little bird wrapped in a frenzy
Of forces too alive even for her.

The silver bird shudders,
Its wings wailing, and the edges
Glint from the burning eye
In the distant horizon.

She melts away.

Even the sun cannot see
Which blue body took her.

×

She wants to live in blue.

×

The sun sighs, lets blue wash over her,
And rises.
