"Hey, ma" I said as soon as I stepped into her kitchen.

I put my keys away, and kissed her on the cheek.

She was washing dishes.

"You aint gotta wash dishes. I got it"

She took her hands out of the water, and I took her place.

"Thank you"

"Dad" Byron said, and walked into the kitchen.

Oh, so we supposed to be friends or something now?

"You cooking tonight?" I questioned.

"No, but I can make you something if you want"

"You don't have to do anything extra for me. I'll just go out with Kejuan after this"

"Can I go?"

"How's the knothead?" Mama asked.

"He something. Always down at the drop" I tilted my head back, forcing my glasses back down on my face.

"So you just ignoring me?" Byron questioned.

"I don't know you, so stop trying to talk to me. I'm here for my mama"

"Aight, well fuck you"

Before I knew it, my soapy hand was wrapped around his neck, and I was choking him.

"Bryson!" My mama tried to pry my hands off of him.

For the first time in my entire life, I saw fear in his eyes.

I squeezed harder, and she kept pushing against me, trying to get me to stop.

"I should've let the state take yo ass, cause you aint shit"

I pushed his head against the table, and let go.

My glasses fell, and I picked them up before leaving.

"Bye, ma" I said, and left her house.

"You choked the boy?" Kejuan laughed.

"I felt all powerful and whatnot" I pulled my sleeves down, and drank my tea.

"So you like hurting people now?"

"I would say that it's more of a transfer of energy"

Only this time, someone else gets the shit end of the stick.

"You trying to justify it too. I'm proud of you"

"That shouldn't be anything to be proud of"

I was glad that I did it though. I wouldn't take it back, and I wasn't going to apologize.

"Watch out for Bryson. Y'all push him too far, and he ready to fuck somebody up. Then glasses come off, and it's going down"

I laughed. "You can't ever take anything seriously"

"Cause lifes a joke" He bit into his burger, and a piece of bacon fell out. "This that good shit"

He asked for less burger, more lettuce, and more bacon

"Don't surprised when yo stomach start to hang over your belt"

"I could be sexy. Imma get a face tattoed on it. The two of us against the world"

"You saying that now. Just wait and see"

"What you do with Le-hoena?"

"Sent her right back to her family. If she can't figure out a way to leave her situation, then I'm sorry for her"

"Straight like that, huh?"

"Well she's not going to be around me anymore. No one told her to have sex with a child"
