And he wasn't there; he wasn't there to wish you a happy birthday, or to hug you or kiss you. He wasn't in your arms, because he was away on tour, and he hated it. He hated how he couldn't be with you on your special day, but he made sure to spend the day talking to you on the phone, because even though he wasn't there, he wasn't missing your birthday – he wouldn't miss it for the world.

And he's super excited; more so than he should be. From the grin on his face, anyone would think it was his birthday, and not yours. He can't sit still, he's too excited for any of that, and he instead wriggles around in his seat. His cheeks hurt from smiling all day, but he doesn't mind, because it's your birthday, and he knows that you're happy, so he is too.

And he makes sure he's the first to give you a birthday kiss; and the only. He won't let any guys near you; not today. He wakes up early, just so he can be sure to get the first kiss from the birthday girl, pecking your lips as you lay beside him, dreaming. When you wake up, he won't let you out of the house. He keeps you away from everyone else, holed up in your house watching movies and eating junk food, so he can be sure that no other guys get a kiss from you.

And he made it special; he made it all about you. He didn't leave your side, not even once. He sat next to you on the couch all day, surrounded by empty chocolate wrappers and crumbs from your birthday cake. He spends the day being mischievous, and forcing you to be too, prank calling people and poking fun at the actors in the shows on television to make you laugh – after all, it was your birthday, and he would do anything to see that smile of yours today; he didn't want you to be sad on your birthday.

And you were convinced he had forgotten; and it broke your heart. He hadn't mentioned it all day, not even once, but when you came home from work, you were shocked to find him standing in the middle of your living room with your family and friends, shouting and cheering as he sprang up from behind the couch, celebrating your birthday with the surprise party he had planned.
