Abruptly, their rolling prison came to a halt. “Why did we stop?” Fred wondered out loud. “I don’t know, but I’m glad we did. All that rolling was making me sick!” Bob replied. “Well, just make sure you don’t faint! All I need is an unconscious friend,” said Fred in return. The side panel re-opened, showcasing some more darkness. “Well, that makes a nicely convenient end to our conversation!” Fred exclaimed. “I was afraid it was going to get awkward for a second.”
“Anyway, let’s see what it’s like out there in that imposing darkness.” Bob said. They exited. Once they were out, they noticed that the lights had blinked on, very dimly but growing steadily brighter. Bob took a quick mental inventory of the room. Large and round, with a small pool of water, and a trough of food. A treadmill, and lots of cushions. Oh, and twenty cats gathered in the middle, looking at us. “Where are we?!” Bob questioningly exclaimed. A medium sized black and white female cat said snidely, “Apparently, where the robot ball dropped you off.”
“Just because you and Jasmine got further into the tunnels than the rest of us, Cookie, doesn’t mean that you have to be mean!” said another female cat, small and yellow. “Whatever, Muffin.” Cookie replied condescendingly. “Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Bob said. “Could someone please explain what’s going on here? Please?”
Muffin started to explain. “Okay, let’s start from the top. Please, no interruptions… Last year, Dr. Abe struck onto something big: There really is another dimension, and a way to get to it, too! But how to test his dimensional door without exposing his precious discovery to the public? Easy, for him. Get some small, intelligent, yet easily found animals. Cats! All he had to do was use some of his inventions to get all the materials, tools, and appliances needed to open a top-of-the-line cat hotel. Test subjects and financing, all in one place. So, in small groups, we were all lured in and tested. The little ‘accident’ one of your friends surely had was just a ploy to get you into the tunnel for the real tests, not the fake ones up there. Some of his robots’ alarm signals got all messed up, though, so we were brought to the fail room before we even got to the test arenas. Cookie and Jasmine were the first though, so they got to the information packet before they got caught. That’s how we know all of this.” Muffin finished with a sigh. “They weren’t able to get all the way to the win room, where all the ‘accident’ victims are waiting, though, and Dr. Abe doesn’t even bother to watch our progress, so we’re stuck here!”
“Okay, wow,” Bob said. “What do you guys even do down here all the time?”
“Basically, anything that we can do, so, not much. Food comes every artificial night. That’s why we have a fresh supply right now, and the lights ‘dramatically’ blinked on for your entrance because, as mentioned, we have artificial nights and days.” another cat said, this one a black and gray male. “My name’s Cupcake, by the way.” What’s with all the food names? Bob wondered to himself. All of a sudden, there was a weird low rumbling sound…
To be continued…
