In the movie version of The Little Mermaid, the mermaid, Ariel, is magically turned into a human to win the heart of a human prince named Eric by a sea witch, Ursula. In the ending, Ariel gets her happy ending with Eric, along with a beautiful wedding.
In Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid, the mermaid is turned into a human, but as she walks around on her new human legs, it feels like she's walking in shards of glass. The prince, however, married another woman and forgot about the mermaid saving his life. She is given a chance to become herself again is she killed the prince by stabbing in the heart. Following her heart, she decided not to kill him and threw herself into the ocean to her death where her body dissolves into sea foam.
