In the movie version of Pinocchio, the puppet himself is cheerful, naïve and curious. A charming cricket, Jiminy Cricket, is assigned by the Blue Fairy to become Pinocchio's guide and conscience.
In Carlo Colladi's Pinocchio, the marionette is mischievous, bratty, troublesome and impulsive. When he meets the talking cricket, he immediately kills him by smashing him with a mallet and the cricket's ghost haunts Pinocchio throughout the majority of the story.
