I reach forward intent on touching his shoulder where the imprint is but find my hand shoved away by a grinning Sam who places his hand where mine was about to be. He looks at Jack in confusion for a moment then jolts away as if he’s been electrocuted. “What the...” he starts to yell before stopping to look at Jack once again “you could have told me, you ass hole” he growls though still grinning while Jack growls back at him. What the heck just happened? I look between Jack and Sam, guess I’ll have to see for myself.
While they both aren’t paying attention I place my hand of Jack’s mark and wait for something to happen at first it’s nothing and then suddenly a bolt of power jolts into my fingertips, spreading up through my body before returning everything to normal. Except it’s not normal... somehow everything is different without having changed at all. Suddenly a wave of images flutter into my mind of wolves prowling and then Jack and Sam I turn to look at them in confusion.
“Cool hey?” Sam whispers knowing I can hear him perfectly. I look up at Jack and immediately avert my eyes and bow my head in respect before looking back up at him somehow knowing I have gained his approval. I look between Jack and Sam in confusion, but we were already the way our ancestors were... weren’t we? Somehow I find myself sending images of the hunt to them and Jack nods in agreement.
“Our human instincts were blocking us... probably something else as well but I haven’t really had time to figure it out” Jack informs me.
“Hey mother’s club! Feel like filling the rest of us in?” Jordan growls as he comes over to us. This is going to take a while... He comes to stand in front of Jack and looks up at him, oh shit. Jack growls harshly and Jordan being Jordan growls back which makes Jack rather pissed. Images of dominance and hurting Jordan flood through my mind.
“Jordan submit to him” I urge and Jordan looks at me for a second before nodding his head and looking back at Jack, this time lowering his head before looking at him.
“Does someone mind telling me what the fuck is going on?”
“Touch his Alpha mark” I sigh making Jordan give me a ‘what the fuck’ look before doing as I say. Thank god Jordan listens to me.
“Shit!” and Jordan is officially a ‘Pure Werewolf’ now for all hell to break loose.
“Everyone touch Jack’s arm already... before Jordan does something stupid.” Sam calls and then suddenly Jordan is glaring at him evilly. Being impulsive and reckless is not the best thing for a werewolf...
The others all gather around Jack taking turns to touch his mark before losing themselves in the fresh images flashing through their minds, submitting and then stepping away for the next person. Finally we are all in the same state.
“Now maybe we can actually find some answers” Jordan grumbles.
“It’s probably better if we each ask individual questions and then refer back later on.” I suggest, saying my thoughts aloud knowing that we will get nowhere trying to get everyone to focus on the same questions.
“Good idea... split up and find the answers you need” Jack calls out “but try to makes them relevant to our situation” he adds looking non subtly at Mitch who grins and shrugs. Yeah the answer to all our problems is how Mitch is going to get in as many girl’s pants as possible.
I walk back over to the familiar piece of wall and find myself once again staring at the same inscription ‘Inruk Lupus alaea frageset’ but this time I understand what it means and I can’t say it’s of nice sentiment. Thankfully I have a feeling it doesn’t relate to now but the future, not that that’s much more pleasing. What could it possibly mean?
I guess I’ll think about it later for now something is telling me there is something more urgent to attend to. Turning around I know I’ve found what as my eyes lock on Seb and Calum who are bunched together by another stretch of wall conversing excitedly. They seem to feel my gaze because they both turn around to look at me at once looking worried... as they should be. I send images of collecting fire wood to everyone and signal for the two of them to follow me.
They seem to feel my gaze because they both turn around to look at me at once looking worried... as they should be. I send images of collecting fire wood to everyone and signal for the two of them to follow me. I can almost sense their reluctance as they follow me out of the Tarhbeish.
I continue walking into the forest until I know we are far enough away to be out of hearing distance. I turn around to look at the two of them and my heart clenches as I see the sadness in their eyes. “Please tell me there is a good reason as to why you two are adamant on holding onto her?” I finally break the silence my voice filled with a familiar desperation that I haven’t let slip in a long time. They look at me, their mouths slack and their energy bussing with confusion. “I mean there has to be a valid reason that you would risk Jack finding out and possibly killing someone” I reason with myself as well as them.
“She must’ve left against her will” Seb finally speaks his voice pleading, I open my mouth to tell him how ridiculous he sounds but he cuts me off, “why else would my inscription mention the bound we have with her?” What?
“What does your inscription say?” I ask cautiously not wanting them to get their hopes up.
“Well it used to say ‘To which we are joined’ but now it says ‘To which we are joined, to whom we are bound’”
“Who else could it mean” Calum adds hopefully looking me straight in the eyes so intensely that I have to look away.
“So because it references her you automatically assume she went against her will?” I ask them hoarsely knowing that much more of this kind of conversation will bring the pain flooding back.
“Why else would it show up when we were asking about what to do and I was thinking about Erin?” Seb reasons, hope glinting in his eyes.
“Do you have any idea how much pain you would put everyone through by even talking about this, talking about her like that?”
“What if she was forced, what if she had no choice?” Calum pleads once again
“Then she would have died before she stepped foot out of this territory.” I find myself now reasoning with them. “Are you suggesting that a fearless Alpha like Erin would just let herself be forced away? Are you telling me that the main person in your lives who believes in honour would abandon that and scar us worse than if she had died? Do you have any idea how people would turn against you if you even uttered a word about her always being the girl we thought we knew?” My voice is filled with frustration as I try to get them to understand.
“So people find it easier to believe that she was manipulating everyone all along than that she had no choice but to leave?” Seb asks incredulously
“It is something the Erin we knew would have been capable of... unlike walking away” I try to stay calm as they look at me in horror.
“You honestly don’t find it hard to believe she did that?” Calum asks angrily
“Of course I found it incredibly hard to believe, It was the most painful thing I’ve ever had to come to terms with in my life but it is more believable then anyone finding a way to outsmart her and get her to leave unscathed.”
“So you’ve just given up”
“I’ve done what is best for my tribe and for my pack which is what you should be doing too”
“And what about what’s best for Erin?” I flinch back as if I’ve been slapped as her name leaves his mouth. I feel myself begin to shake as I look back at them.
“Look me in the eye and ask that question” I whisper, they both take their turns to flinch back as I did before though neither of them repeat it. I take a deep breath needing to get out of the clearing and distract myself. I walk in-between them towards the direction we came from, looking back before I leave. “Do whatever it is you need to do to figure out your inscription and whatever you think will get her back but you will not mention it to anyone, you will not leave this territory and you must obey your Alpha no matter what his demands are. Don’t be upset if you don’t succeed”
