"Show you around? She's not your secretary. Go see for yourself" Sam said. I put a hand on her shoulder and asked her to stop.
"What's your next class?" I asked Rohan
"Physics" he informed.
"Cool. That's my next class too. You can accompany me and I'll show you around the school today. But after today, please be kind enough to stay away from me, okay?"
He nodded. I had been in Rockfield High long enough to know what the guys were like. Drugs were a common thing in my school. You could spot couples making out in every nook and corner of the school. Sometimes, I'd even seen some of the teachers make out with students. Gross.
Rohan might have been cute but so were the other guys at my school. I had become immune to their cuteness/hotness/whatever-ness. Now, I would prefer Albert Einstein to them anyday.
"And just because she's being nice to you because you're a new student clearly not mature enough to go round the school yourself, don't you dare do anything she doesn't like, do you get that?" Sam spoke, her protective elder sister mode on.
Yes, Samantha was elder to me. Although I, clearly, was the mature one.
She was eleven minutes older. When we were kids, she'd even insisted that two cakes be brought on our birthday so that she could blow the candles eleven minutes before me.
Well.
"Is she always like this?" Rohan asked me.
I nodded and said, "there's still some time for the next class to begin. You could go out and explore"
Luckily, he liked my suggestion and left with a 'Ciao'.
After he'd left, Sam said, "He's annoying, don't you think? And he called me 'miss'. Like, seriously? Who does that? Weirdo"
"Sam, stop! We're not going to waste our time discussing his choice of words"
"Right. So, what's up, miss?" she imitated Rohan, making me laugh.
"We have to go to this party today, Sam"
Sam groaned.
"Come on, it would be fun! And mom called. It's their firm's anniversary"
"Do I look like I care, Shan?"
"Sam, please? Pretty please? I want to go to make mom happy and what would I do without you babe?"
After ten minutes of coaxing, Sam finally agreed. On one condition, though. That I let her dress me up. I could dread the party now.
"You should get rid of those glasses, Shan. Wear contacts. We'd look exactly similar, then. Wouldn;t that be so cool? " Sam said.
I shook my head "Like your admirers do not annoy me enough. No, thank you. I'm happy the way I am"
"And I love you!" Sam said. My sister made me feel happy. Maybe that was why we'd always been best friends.
Another one of Sam's admirers from the 'fake' group came to the library, looking for her. She was late for her 'Home Economics' class.
Math was the only subject me and Sam had in common. That too, because I had forced her to opt for math and religiously taught her every day.
Except for that, Sam had a rather unconventional mix of subjects - Home Economics, Music, Fashion Designing, Aesthetics.
I was glad Sam had chosen subjects she really wanted to study. She loved cooking and music. The food she made was amazing and she could everything from prawns to pasta to Rajma-chawal and Chole Bhatoore.
And she had inherited our father's musical talent. She knew how to play the guitar and piano and sang really REALLY well.
Fashion Designing and Arts was something she was naturally good at.
Overall, Sam was a favorite among her teachers, just like I was and our parents never received complaints from school.
They'd never really bothered about our marks. Mom occassionally glanced through our marks card and complimented us for the good work but we knew she wouldn't have a problem even if one of us failed or something.
Sam left me in the comforts of the library and I started thinking about Rohan. How was I supposed to take someone around the school?
What places was I supposed to show to him?
I hoped he wasn't arrogant like most of the students at Rockfield. I couldn't mix up with people, anyway. His arrogance would only make it worse. And unlike Sam, I wasn't the one to put my uncomfort with something at display.
"What book is that?" Why was I hearing this particular voice again and again?
I looked up to see Rohan standing on front of me and smiling.
"A brief history of time" I said and added "by.."
"Stephen Hawking" he completed my sentence and then, without asking, sat down on the chair next to me.
"You like Hawking?" I was surprised.
"Who doesn't? Although I'm more influenced by Satyendranath Bose" I was shocked now. He had just named one of my personal favorite physicists of all time!
"Good Lord, Bose is my favorite!" I squealed, receiving a glare from the librarian.
I composed myself and actually smiled at Rohan. "I didn't know you read Bose, wow!" I said.
"Never judge a book by its cover, love"
I frowned at the last word. He laughed and said, "Alright. Rule No. 1: No calling Shannon 'love'"
I smiled again.
"So, Shannon, what are your views on the Relativity Theory?"
We spent the rest of the time discussing Relativity, Hawking's views, recent developments in physics. I was even more surprised when I discovered that he was also aware about the scientific knowledge contained in the Vedas.
When the bell for the physics class rang, I wasn't dreading spending time with the new boy. I wanted to go to the loo so I explained the way to the Physics Room to Rohan and told him I would meet him there in some time.
In the physics room, I saw him surrounded by women. Most of them were not even in Physics. I confidently walked up to his desk and said, "Hello, fellow nerd. I was wondering if I could sit with you?"
