"Momma we won't have a party?"

Your daughter asked.

You couldn't help but notice how much she looked like Dalton. She had his hair and eyes and his melodious voice. Your daughter was barely eight, and she had already earned the place of lead in school choir.

"Y/d/n this year daddy was out of job and we have pending bills"

Due to recession, many people had lost jobs including your husband Dalton. He was unemployed for almost half a year and your family had faced harsh times. He had got a new job recently but your family was still struggling to recover from the rough patch.

"But its my birthday..."

She trailed off sadly. You could see the hurt and sadness in her grey eyes and however much you wanted to wipe it away, you couldn't.

"Okay honey its late. Lets get you some sleep"

You said gently patting her forehead.

After she fell asleep you gently clambered out of bed and walked downstairs to couch where Dalton was sitting.

He didn't notice you coming, he was too busy in the bills.

"Have some coffee Dalton"

You said handing him the mug.

"Ahh! Nothing can go wrong if we still have coffee in the world"

He said giving you a tight smile.

You knew he was acting brave. He was working double shifts to earn every penny he could to pay the bills. You could see the lines across his face and his eyes were tired, the dark circles and eye bags screaming for rest. The eyes you loved were now pale and shallow.

"We'll work through this"

You said giving his shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

"Only this month's electricity bill is pending now"

He said smiling.

It was an achievement. After all you had six months of bills pending which had now dropped to only one month.

You gave him an encouraging smile.

"But y/d/n school fees was paid by your parents I can't take that. When I married you, I promised your dad I'll take care of you. You are my responsibility. I can't take the money"

He said pinching the bridge of his nose.

"I know. But we'll repay my dad"

You gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.

"Its her birthday tomorrow"

Dalton said.

"And I can't afford a party"

He said sadly.

"Dalton you can't take the blame for everything. She understands"

However much you wanted to have a disney theme party for her you can't, at least not now.

"Lets go sleep"

You said taking the bills from his hand and setting them on the table.

"Sweetheart happy birthday!"

You said picking her in your arms as you spun her around.

"Thank you momma!"

She squealed.

"I'm baking your favourite choco chip cookie and muffins. You want them?"

"Yeeess!"

"But first go brush and get dressed"

You said tickling her nose.

"Where's daddy?"

"He had to leave early for office honey"

"He didn't wish me..."

You could see a small tear at the corner of her eyes.

"Muffin! Don't cry. Its your birthday! He promised he'll be home early. You know how times are now"

She nodded understandingly.

She smiled at how mature she was acting. Unlike other kids her age she wasn't cribbing or throwing tantrums.

"Now go get dressed"

"Sweetheart can you answer the door for me"

You called out to your daughter who was watching Scooby Doo.

"Okay momma!"

"Grandpa! Grandma!"

You heard your daughter squeal in delight.

"Happy birthday sweet heart!"

"I thought you forgot!"

"How can we!"

You heard your dad say.

"Now someone needs a barbie and a pink dress grandpa and grandma brought"

Your mom smiled handing your daughter her gift.

"Thank you!"

She grinned opening the gifts.

As everyone settled on the couch you heard the doorbell again.

"Y/d/n! Someone's here to meet you"

You heard her tiny footsteps.

"Aunt Sophie! Aunt Rebecca!"

She hugged them both, in turn.

"Baby! I missed you so much!"

Sophie picked her in her arms before Rebecca could.

Rebecca scowled at Sophie as both of them burst out laughing.

It was 2'o clock in the noon. Where was Dalton?

When the bell rang for the third time you knew it was Dalton.

"Where were you?"

You asked exasperated.

"Call her"

"Y/d/n! Come here"

She came running.

"Dad!"

She jumped to hug Dalton.

"You didn't wish me"

She said pouting at him.

"Happy birthday princess"

He said kissing her forehead.

"Your gift"

He said handing her a basket.

She carefully removed the cloth kept over it to reveal a small golden retriever puppy.

"Thank you!"

She squealed so loudly that every one came running to foyer.

"Dad brought me puppy!"

She said excitedly.

"Whats its name sweet heart?"

Rebecca asked her.

She tapped her small finger at her chin, lost in deep thought. After marvelling for some time she spoke up.

"Sunshine! Because he's as golden as the sun"

"Beautiful name"

You turned to find Dalton's parents standing.

"Now lets go have lunch. Before I end up eating the chocolate truffle all alone"

His Dalton said to your daughter.

"Its the best birthday ever!"

Your daughter gleamed at Dalton.
