My very non-manly shriek of 'holy-crap-I'm-gonna-die'-surprise echoed a little in the tight space between buildings, petering out to some even less graceful hysterical whimpering. The semi-automatic-wielding, red jumpsuit-dressed villain looms over me, still holding me roughly by the arm to use as a human shield, and of course grinning ear-to-ear in sociopathic amusement at my terror. I put my hands up over my head fearfully as we get farther from the police blockade, muttering some lame "oh god no don't hurt me!" style plea.
He's so busy watching the cops and my (superb) acting, that he doesn't see or hear the White Knight sneaking up behind him. Clad, of course, in his iconic blue and white costume. Knight; the superhero, Me; the sidekick/bait/world's most fortunately nabbed hostage.
And the manoeuvre comes off beautifully.
Knight punches the guy in the back of the head, so hard he's knocked down into me. Or, rather, the force field I toss up between us. The villain's face collides with the field, and I can hear and see that crunch when his nose breaks.
He jumps back in surprise, landing squarely on his rear end and cursing painfully over his face. I see the concentration in the creases of his forehead as he wills the break to heal, and I groan over-dramatically.
"Oh Kniiiiiiiiight. We've got a regenerator here..."
I shout in my purposefully whiny disguise-voice, costume materializing over my clothes with only the flick of a switch. Knight smirks, picking the guy up by the goofy collar of his over-the-top suit, leaving me the space to back up. He looks carefully over the guy's face for a second, shrugging.
"Looks like we do, Horizon." Knight says flatly, smirking a little to say my alias name out-loud. Turning his attention back to the villain, he drops the smirk. "So I guess that makes you a little easier to deal with then, huh?"
The villain pales, realizing his fate the second before Knight hurls him into the air with his super-strength. I can almost count the seconds before the guy comes screaming back down, crumpling to the pavement in a pile of broken bones and red spandex. Knight smiles, but I know there's at least a little concern hiding behind the mask. He really doesn't like seriously hurting the bad guys, but this guy was just asking for it. I mean, come on. He was terrorizing a public school.
Not that I couldn't have dealt with him on my own or anything, but the Knight stepping in probably just saved a number of lives. Not mine though, I mean, I am the Colton Walters. Aka Horizon; fearsome sidekick to Underidge Falls' most iconic superhero: the White Knight.
Okay so maybe I'm not that fearsome. And, maybe I've only been his sidekick for like two days. And maybe that was only because I (so gracefully)— you know what, nah. I'll just start off at the beginning of this crazy new double life. With a train, some pillows, and jar of peanut butter.
