Shadows

Explanations

As I get ready for bed, I think of Sara. I must have an explanation for what's going on.

The flash of light comes, and with it, Sara.

"Hello," I say. 

"Hi," she replies.

"I need to ask you some questions."

"Shoot."

"Okay, first of all, why did the Ghoul keep trying to kill me?"

"It wasn't trying to kill you, it was trying to possess you. I'm guessing because you're a Shadow..."

"Ummm... I'm a Shadow?! Since when?!"

"Oh yeah! I forgot to tell you since our time was cut short yesterday, but you are a Shadow..."

"H-h-how?!"

"We don't actually know how it happened, but you were once a Shadow. You were brought back to the human world and reanimated as a Soul Carrier. The Council is still trying to figure it out."

"Wait. So you are telling me that I am basically living a second life?"

"Pretty much. The Demons are probably trying to bring you to Satan because you're special."

"HOLD UP. SATAN IS REAL?!"

"Yep," she replies casually, examining her nails.

"WHAT?!"

"He's sending his minions to do the work for him. Come to think of it, that's probably why the Banished Barrier is down! I have to tell the Council!"

"No. You are not going anywhere until you tell me what is going on. And that's final."

"Okay. Fine. Here's what's happening, in a nutshell:

The Shadow Council is at war with Satan. There is no Heaven or Hell, but when a Soul Carrier dies, their soul becomes a Shadow. At least, that's what is supposed to happen. About 100 years ago, Satan began to steal the souls of Soul Carriers. They were doomed to eternally serve Satan. He and his Demons are trying to take over the world. I know it may sound like something out of a book or movie, but it's reality."

I shudder. 

"Anyways, the Shadows' job is to protect the Soul Carriers, and that's why we set up the Banished Barrier to keep demons out. But lately, there have been a lot of Demons breaking through. We think that Satan is trying to build up an army of Demons. Remember that scream you heard the other night? That was the sound of someone's soul being taken away."

  "But where do I come in?"  

"The Council believes that you have Shadow powers. And you are the only one who can stop him."

"Me? I'm just an average girl. No way!"

"But that's the thing. You're not an average girl. You are a Shadow.

"But what does this mean?"

"It means that you are going to help me save the world."
